GOODBYE FOREVER

Dear Cigarettes,

I openly welcomed you into my life at 15. My boyfriend smoked and shared you with me. My girlfriend would sneak you from her Dad for me. I stole you from my parents’ packs and sneaked into the cellar with you.

My first paycheck at 17 bought me a whole carton of you. It was no time until I was smoking up to two packs a day of you. But were you appreciative? No!!

I cared for you deeply, but I came to realize you did not care for me.

Right from the start, you were deceitful. You convinced me I could get through anything life handed out as long as I had you by my side. You misused me: You gave me migraine headaches, played havoc with my heart and lungs, and messed up my circulation.

When I decided to leave, you taunted me. Told me I could not get along without you. I came to believe you and went back to you. But I was wrong.

I’m here to tell you that I do not want you in my life anymore. I am through listening to your lies. I am done with you. Taunt me, if you must, but my ears are now deaf to you. I am leaving for good this time.

Goodbye Forever.

Thanks all for your posts and support. DavesTime . YES!! NOPE for sure, this time. Not up for discussion. I vow to seek help from members should I be having difficulty with cigarette yearnings. I also plan to put my precious object--my small wooden cross--where I keep my cigarettes as a harsh reminder of risking its loss. If I relapse, that cross is a goner. 😞

I plan to kick butt with this quit! If/when difficulties with cigarette yearnings occur I will change my ways and post online for help. I know it's easy to say all these things when you are getting ready to quit. So I am planning to safeguard my quit with all the resources I can muster. I would be heartbroken to give up my precious object and I so do not want to go through all of this again!!

Thank you my friend. I just do not have the heart or reserves to go through this whole thing again. This HAS TO BE my last quit!!

Thank you so much maryfreecig‌ for your support and for the reminder of the one day at a time component. I noticed there was a 12 step group on this site but didn't seem to be active. I may do an online 12 step as well.

Suzy, your letter said it all.  We have to be in it to win it.  I am ready.  I am all ready changing my life.

And you will too.  Remember what Marilyn says about good days and bad days, and I know you have some challenging days ahead.  Me too!! xoxo

Thank you Strudel‌ for your support and encouragement! It means a lot~ See by your profile that you are a cat lover too! My Mr. Flurry is just getting over and unexpected case of pancreatitis~ Tore my heart out to see him sick. He was 4 on December 1st. Something unique abut him is that he's deaf. (Naturally that in itself makes him an indoor cat). He has thick white fur and blue eyes; cats this color often carry the recessive gene for deafness. We love each other 🙂

Yes, Chris, I believe this is the time for us; to become free of this terrible addiction! Glad we are here to help each other 🙂

Hi Suzy!  Today is my Day One also, and not my first.  So far so good here....I'm using the 2 mg gum about every half hour.  I'm not gonna worry about the nicotine addiction this time.....the point for me is to do whatever I have to....to not pick up that first cigarette.    I'll deal with the nicotine later.  I spent most of last night here reading, reading reading and its really helped me for the first time to feel like I CAN "not smoke".....I read this really good thing here about how I was keeping the Door Open rather than taking smoking "off the table as an option"   That's helping me also today to really know its my choice.   I'm thinking of you today too....

Hi Lynn,

Welcome to the Ex~

Congratulations on your Day One! I hear what you say about the nicotine; I will be using patches and an emergency and sparingly backup of nicotine gum and mints. Even though I will be using the nrt's for a time in this quit, I still consider that time an important period of my overall quit.

Actually. my Day One isn't until Tuesday the 6th and I continue to prepare mentally for this quit following my very recent relapse.

Again, welcome aboard!  ~ Suzy

Hi Lynn,

Just a follow-up to my entry above. I did quit as planned on Jan. 6th and this is now day 3 for me as an ex- smoker. I hope you are doing well with your quit also~

Sorry for my delayed answer Scooterbutt‌. I have just returned from being out of town.. I am happy to report that I stuck to my commitment to quit on Jan 6th and that today marks my third day as an ex-smoker 🙂

Hi @Sweetpit,

Good to hear from you! Actually, this is day #3 for me as an ex-smoker; my cravings have been short-lived so far. Doing lots of deep-breathing and chewing a little nico-gum as supplement to the patch. Have a bottle of water at my side. Thanks for checking in!

Thank you Scooterbutt‌! Am amazed I was able to come back from a relapse and get back into the quit mode. Was afraid I'd thrown away my quit; it was scary!

congratulations!!!!  I"ve reset my quit day for Monday and have been reading everyday and thinking about how i'm gonna handle things.   I'm feeling so sad and hopeless.

maryfreecig

Reading and planning how you are going to handle this is great work. Sad and hopeless? Those are feelings--but not the whole story, Quitting is doable one day at a time.

SuzyQ411

maryfreecig‌ has offered some very good points for you to consider lynnjoss‌! I do want to add, however, that your feelings of sadness and hopelessness may be an indication of depression. Depression is a common reaction for many smokers when quitting.  After all, you are separating yourself from something that has played a large part in your life. Perhaps this article will be of help to you: Depression Related to Quitting Smoking . If your depressive-like feelings should continue for a month or more, contact your Doctor for additional input. Hang in there. Good luck with your quit~ Suzy

I love your letter that you are over with the lies! I have been quit for 4 months now! It gets much easier after the first 1-2 months! Now whenever I have a craving I chew some cinnamon gum.

So happy for you Court2Knee!  I have come back following a relapse. Look forward to again being at the point that you are 🙂

About the Author
Prior to my first quitting on 8/25/2019, I was a heavy smoker for over 60 years. That time, I quit due to health concerns regarding clogged arteries to my brain. Tar deposits from cigarettes were making the situation worse. I had become a prime candidate for a stroke and required surgery to clean out my left carotid artery. I have relapsed 4X since that quit, the last one being on 05.15.2022. ( At one point in all of this madness, I had been quit for 1.5 years). Then on 9/7/2021 I began my recent eight month quit before my current relapse. I am in the process of planning a return to the non-smoking life. After more than 2 weeks of smoking, wheezing and coughing and being short of breath, I have set my new quit date of June 1, 2022 as the beginning of my forever quit. I am done with this madness!! God is good.
