Focusing on problems will bury you deeper into it. Focusing on the solution gives you a way out.

Exactly!  Just like focusing on  "I want a cig... I'm craving for a smoke"  only makes the cravings stronger.    Focusing on  "I don't do that anymore....... what can I do instead" opens the door to solutions.

Great Blog!!!

Tracy,

I get it - because I found that during my Quit process, I found myself focusing on the problems in my life MORE -- which only made my desire to feed my smoking addiction stronger. I've learned that is the insideous nature of the drug addiction. Problems in life will ALWAYS be there (smoking doesn't change them)- but when you choose to stop feeding the addiction, the nicotine receptors in the brain "panic" because they're dying and will do ANYTHING to get their "food" so they'll survive... SO your "thoughts" are directed to your problems because those problems were (are) a TRIGGER- a reason to light up and feed the addiction. The GOOD news?? Once you stop feeding the addiction and enough time passes (4 days minimum to detox from the physical dependence on nicotine), the anxiety eases and it gets a little easier with each day that passes AFTER that - especially when you're "focusing on the solution", as you said. WAIT it out, continue to focus on the solutions and the POSITIVES and allow the addiction & thought processes leading you toward smoking again to die down... NEVER give up and Not One Puff Ever again... N.O.P.E.

Your mind is such an important tool in this quitting process.  Keep it thinking positively, and you will get positive results.  I like a quote by Henry Ford, "If you think you can or think you can't, you are right."

You CAN do this.

Tracy and Kari,

You are both getting this.  And it's great to see you both here, learning and helping at the same time.

I have also realized, and took me forever, that I need to do this for myself - not for anyone else. I am still tottering but feeling stronger and more determined as my quit date approaches. I CAN DO THIS!
