Five Years Today!

Today I celebrate my FIVE year anniversary of becoming smoke-free! I actually smoked my last cigarette the afternoon of 9/11/18, but chose the 12th as my completely cig-free start date. It wasn't easy in those first days and weeks, and I struggled a lot at times during those early months. (not unexpected, since I had smoked since I was 14, over 45 years!), but with the encouragement and wisdom of the elders and my fellow quitters I pushed through the "arghhh" times.  I admit that even now I have moments where the thought of a cigarette pops into my mind, particularly when I get stressed, but I honestly cannot imagine actually inhaling that toxic sludge into my lungs. I don't do that anymore! And i am breathing so much easier.

I no longer come here very often, but wanted to let the long-timers know how I am doing, and offer encouragement and hope for those just starting the journey to their freedom. Congratulations also to my quit buddies and fellow 9/12/18 quitters, @minihorses and @Jimbone!

Thank you, everyone!

Congratulations on freeing yourself from nicotine addiction!  Not easy, but you did it and for FIVE YEARS!!!!  You may never know the years you have added and the breaths you have added.  You inspire me to keep going.  Quit day 360.

@DavesTime Super congrats on your five years of success.  We're really not that far apart as I am 5 + years.   I do remember those early days we shared and celebrating with your quit buddies @minihorses  and @Jimbone . You were such great support for each other.   We have heard from them occasionally, so I hope they'll stop buy to celebrate also.

Thank you for inspiring and supporting so many on your journey.

Great job! I just had a set back, so I am back to day one, but your journey sounds great! I can't imagine being quit for five years!

@jenking Jen, five years ago I couldn't imagine being quit this long, either! My longest prior quit had been about two years. I finally realized that I can never, ever have just one puff or I will be back to square one. You will get there. N.O.P.E

About the Author
I was a closet smoker from the time I first tried a cigarette at fourteen years old. It was going to be a one-time experiment when I was by myself, just to see what it like, but it didn't work out that way. Forty-seven years later, after countless attempts to quit smoking, I finally was able to quit smoking on 9/12/18! I couldn't have done it without this site and the wonderful people who are here.
