First day not smoking!

Today is my first day not smoking and I am finding it pretty tough!  I am using the 4 mg gum and it is helping with some of the cravings.  I just feel so empty today and really feel lost.  It seems that every time I try to quit, I don't feel like doing anything else but lay around.  Any suggestions out there that can give me some motivation?

in my brief experience it is hard but it does get better.

i really have found walking and exercise to help. This afternoon I had a big craving and did jumping jacks unitl I could nto breath anymore.

the thing that helped me the most was that other people here understood and had been through the same thing.

I understand how you feel.  I felt the same way!  So guess what........I layed around all weekend...watched moves, slept, snacked and slept some more..but I DID NOT SMOKE.  As the days pass it WILL GET BETTER and you will find yourself motivated to do other things to keep yourself busy.  Hang in there

Hi Brenda and welcome to Ex!   Use these techniques to feel more comfortable...

Stay close to this site and remember NOPE=Not One Puff Ever...and as long as you stick to this ONE SIMPLE rule, you will win....it the meantime, drink plenty of fresh cold water to rid your body of the toxins,6 smaller, nutritious meals throughout the day to keep your blood-sugar levels steady, (don't diet!)......and it will keep your blood sugar level and the low blood sugar induced fogginess and craves away.

....take big arm STRETCHES as often as needed to relax tense muscles and most importantly, take big DEEP BREATHS TO RELAX AND RELIEVE anger... take a nap, take walks, stay buzy with something you LIKE and brush you teeth immediately after each meal...stick your head in the freezer and DEEP BREATHE....If you bite into a lemon, the smoking thought will be gone instantly...try it, it works, also suck on sugarfree hard candy or lollipops and one of my friends here says be sure to use the Halls mentholyptus cough drops......Be prepared in advance for it,not surprised by it...Smoking thoughts only have power when you have fear. Face it head on and do not try to run or hide. You have the strength and power to tell it NO...You have the CHOICE to tell it NO. Each time you get a smoking urge, immediately DISTRACT yourself and kick the thought out of your head!!!

And educate yourself about the addiction and the mind games it plays on us....READ,READ,READ for a successful quit...the more you read, the EASIER it is...

CHOOSE to quit smoking, not TRY. Educate yourself by reading these links that most of us have used to help us quit and STAY quit! This is about making a DECISION to never put another cigarette in your mouth, mean it, and be committed to follow through on that decision. Also allow NO excuses AND hang in there for as long as it takes, no matter how uncomfortable you become.... This is about re-learning your life WITHOUT cigarettes....start changing your "normal" routine....because a smoker's routine revolves around cigarettes. You will be a nonsmoker so change how you start your morning so it doesn't revolve around cigarette breaks, etc. You CAN do this! ....http://quitsmokingonline.com/

Is feeling crummy for a few days worth living longer? None of us knows our destiny but on average exer women live longer than smoking women! It's worth being "out of commision" for awhile IMO! Nancy's advice is very helpful! Check out whyquit.com/day 1

Hey, Ladies!

Welcome!  I smoked for 40+ years and quit with the help of Allen Carr's book, frozen Hershey Kisses, and playing Angry Birds a LOT!!!!  Remember when a crave hits to distract, distract, distract.  The conversation in your head should NOT be:  "I want a cigarette.  No, I don't.  I WANT a cigarette.  No, I don't."  Instead, it needs to be:  I want a cigarette.  Well, since I don't do that anymore, what shall I do to distract myself during this crave?"  See the difference?

This IS work - but it is worthwhile work that you are doing.  Your skin, your hair, you lungs and your blood vessels will thank you for it.  When it gets tough, think of what you can buy with the money you are saving by not buyng these things that are, in fact, killing you.

Stay close to the site and read and read and read some more.  When you need it, ask us for advice, information and support.  We all here want you to be successful!

Thanks to everyone on the great comments.  Just the posts alone motivates me.  Well, tomorrow I have plans to keep busy and probably even go for a walk if the weather is good.    Thanks again!
