FROM BAD TO WORSE BUT HANGING IN THERE

Dick-- my ex-- returned home about 2 weeks ago after about two weeks of inpatient physical therapy treatments following hospitalization for generalized weakness and inability to care for himself. Since then, my kids have been taking turns caring for him at home. Kevin- my Syracuse son-- is now living there for a bit as his employer still has the attorneys working from home and doing Zoom appearances with clients and judges. To help out, Brian-- my Tennessee son- just went home Sunday after caring for his Dad for almost a week. In between, Darren -- my son who lives in this area-- has been filling in. They are doing their best to honor their Dad's desire to remain at home.

The past few days, Dick has taken a a definite turn for the worse. He is not eating or drinking much and has lost strength again. The county home health nurse and the physical therapist have taken turns doing home visits. Kevin had begun the process of seeking a full-time paid live-in care provider through an area agency.

Today I was supposed to drive up to see Dick and Kevin and to take some homemade Spanish rice with me to hopefully entice Dick to eat as it has been one of his favorite meals over the years. However, I was informed this morning that Dick had a very bad night and that Kevin had called the ambulance to transfer him to the hospital.

It turns out that Dick has Covid and the hospital is hemming and hawing about admitting him. I told Kevin to refuse a transfer back home for his Dad and to contact the county nurse and to get her involved on his Dad's behalf. Dick at home with Covid and being cared for by his sons is NOT a rational solution. At this point, I am awaiting outcome on all of this.

This is definitely an occasion where I truly wish I had not made a sacred spiritual promise to never smoke again. BUT, I DID make that promise and I CHOOSE TO HONOR THAT PROMISE.

NOPE ! NOPE !! NOPE !!!

Please keep my ex and our family in your thoughts and prayers.

Prior to my first quitting on 8/25/2019, I was a heavy smoker for over 60 years. That time, I quit due to health concerns regarding clogged arteries to my brain. Tar deposits from cigarettes were making the situation worse. I had become a prime candidate for a stroke and required surgery to clean out my left carotid artery. I have relapsed 4X since that quit, the last one being on 05.15.2022. ( At one point in all of this madness, I had been quit for 1.5 years). Then on 9/7/2021 I began my recent eight month quit before my current relapse. I am in the process of planning a return to the non-smoking life. After more than 2 weeks of smoking, wheezing and coughing and being short of breath, I have set my new quit date of June 1, 2022 as the beginning of my forever quit. I am done with this madness!! God is good.
