Drinking Alcohol and Your Quit

You need to make lots of good decisions when you quit smoking to keep it your #1 priority.  One of the most important is whether to continue going out on the weekends with friends or family and including alcohol.  This is another area of your life that it is important to change a bit, especially early in your quit.  That one bad decision to drink has caused a LOT of quits to be lost by members of our community.  I have read about it over and over through the years, and don't want it to happen to you.  Do you REALLY know how much alcohol it takes for your addled brain to believe "just one won't hurt?"

A quit is a terrible thing to lose.

I know for myself I could never drink without smoking. I’ve known many who aren’t even smokers that will have a cigarette while drinking. If I wasn’t capable of walking away after only one drink, know I wouldn’t be able to walk away after only one cig. Luckily won’t have that temptation.

This has been so, so important in making this quit as *easy* on myself as possible.  Zero booze.  Instead of looking at it like depravation, I'm continuing to add up all of the positive mini victories that this journey brings - sleeping better, clearer skin, clear lungs, WAY more energy, and a deep knowledge that I'm being true to myself.  If anyone is struggling with this, please feel free to reach out!

Thanks Nancy.  I find a lot of comfort and great advice in your blogs!  Entering No Man's Land....

Fortunately, I am well aware of my penchant for alcohol and that I like to smoke while enjoying alcohol. I will not be seeing the poker room of my local casino for quite some time due to this.

Small price to pay...

A wonderful idea, Dale! Thanks!

Perhaps I will try when I trust myself a bit more...

About the Author
I smoked until a vascular surgeon informed me of the damage I had done to myself by doing so. I quit 11 years ago, and I can swim laps virtually FOREVER now, walk most other days 40 minutes to an hour and a half. What a difference quitting has made in my life! I strive to help others find this wonderful freedom from addiction, too.
