Today, I am 26 and an Ex... but here's how I started smoking. I started late at 21. At the time, I was a self proclaimed cigar aficionado and would enjoy the occasional cigar during a special event or just on a nice night - sitting out back by the pool watching the stars.
One night, while out at a bar, a friend of mine was smoking a type of Clove cigarette called Djarum. They look like the traditional cigarette but are flavored (menthol, vanilla, cherry, etc). They smelled very good so I tried one and was hooked. The menthol were my favorite and thus I was reborn an addict.
I soon graduated to a pack a day but after a year, I decided to quit - as I found myself unable to workout at the same intensity I was used to. Quitting the first time lasted for a year, but ultimately I started up again (I don't recall why).
I was soon back up to a pack a day with one before leaving the house for work, the next two or so on my drive to work, a few peppered through the work day, two on the way home and the rest while at home or when out for drinks.
Part of my motivation to quit was to get back to a time when I didn't constantly smell of smoke - not to mention to be able to start working out again and getting truly healthy.
Now here I am today, at 5+ months into being smoke-free and looking forward to every smoke-free day! I contribute a lot of my success with quitting to one of my friends. She was also a smoker and was going to quit so it was a nice little nudge in the right direction. Not to mention, we would constantly go back and forth with each other about various statistics regarding what smoking does to you and the benefits of quitting - many of those stats still being burned into my brain today.
