Plans for quitting smoking are on hold until I can get in to see my psychiatrist in September. Unfortunately, the bupropion caused me to become severely manic and I had to stop taking it. So, I need to discuss other options with him at my next appointment (I'm on the waiting list to get in sooner...we'll see how that goes). I would really appreciate not hearing comments like, "You should quit anyway," or "try something else." It would be the height of stupidity for me to do that without direct supervision. Because yes, smoking could kill me, but so could a major depressive episode. That's all for now. I'll let you all know when I set a new date.

I agree that you should not try until your ready and feel confident. If you try before that and fail, you might not try again. I hope you still come here and show support to others and keep us posted. Have you thought about the patch or other aid as a back up possibilty incase pills wont work? Also I have heard that with meds such as buproprion the manic phase stops after a few weeks so might be something to ask when you see the doctor?? Best wishes!!

Read every blog, and also go to why quit.com and read Allen Carr's book.  Hang in there you can work this out.  I had terrible time with Chantix 2 years ago.  The Zyban worked for me this quit.  Stay Strong!

So can you “mix it up” in the meantime?  If you smoke inside – move outside.  If you smoke outside, move to a different section of your deck, balcony, yard what ever is out there.  If you smoke regular – buy a pack of menthol.  If you smoke with coffee try tea.  Anything that you do to start breaking those “associations” will help you down the road.  And keep reading.  Allen Carr. Quitsmokingonline.com and whyquit.com.

When your are ready – you will be ready!

you are dictating the feedback you want to receive.  Change on 'our terms' generally does not work. Nevertheless, good luck to you.

So sorry to hear but I understand what the meds can do as I also had problems with them. I haven't been on EX for long but most people on here seem to understand that it won't help you if they try to push you when you're not able or ready. You are the ONLY one that can decide when your stop time is. I hope the Dr is able to help you out. Until then...best of luck and don't let yourself give up on you.  Ps...Hope to see you on here even if you can't quit at this time.

you forgot to tell us what we ARE allowed to comment, so I hope this comment doesn't break your rules.

I, for one, had to up my anti-depressant after I quit, but i was on a low dose, anyway, so that was fine.  It wasn't until I had a good 60 days quit that I decided that, though.  Please, be aware, that feeling tired and "down" for the first couple weeks of a quit happens to a lot of people, no matter what they get from their doctor.  Its typical for withdrawal.  Its, of course, wise to want the advice of a doctor!  just be careful not to use depression as an excuse to smoke.  I did that for years, and it was just the addiction holding on.

What Chris said makes sense, but with so long to wait you're going to have to really use your imagination to keep mixing things up. Still, there is sooo much reading to do    whyquit.com    and Allen Carr's book have been very helpful to a lot of us on here.      Hopefully suggesting that you try to relax isn't against the rules?

Good luck!
