Day 1

It's been 3 hours and I'm already anxious.  It's almost lunch time and I'm afraid I'll smoke.  My plan:

1) Text my boyfriend right before I leave for lunch.  He's very supportive.

2) Don't go to Mom's house to eat like I usually do.  There are cigarettes there.

3)  Eat something healthy so I don't feel run down this afternoon.

4)  Stay positive.  I'm doing the right thing.

Stay close to this site and remember NOPE=Not One Puff Ever...and as long as you stick to this ONE SIMPLE rule, you will win....it the meantime, drink plenty of fresh cold water to rid your body of the toxins,6 smaller, nutritious meals throughout the day to keep your blood-sugar levels steady, (don't diet!)......and it will keep your blood sugar level and the low blood sugar induced fogginess and craves away.

....take big arm STRETCHES as often as needed to relax tense muscles and most importantly, take big DEEP BREATHS TO RELAX AND RELIEVE anger... take a nap, take walks, stay buzy with something you LIKE and brush you teeth immediately after each meal...stick your head in the freezer and DEEP BREATHE....If you bite into a lemon, the smoking thought will be gone instantly...try it, it works, also suck on sugarfree hard candy or lollipops and one of my friends here says be sure to use the Halls mentholyptus cough drops......Be prepared in advance for it,not surprised by it...Smoking thoughts only have power when you have fear. Face it head on and do not try to run or hide. You have the strength and power to tell it NO...You have the CHOICE to tell it NO. Each time you get a smoking urge, immediately DISTRACT yourself and kick the thought out of your head.!!!

Also...

The most IMPORTANT thing you can do for your quit now is to educate yourself about the addiction and the mind games it plays on us....READ,READ,READ for a successful quit...the more you read, the EASIER it is...

CHOOSE to quit smoking, not TRY. Educate yourself by reading these links to the materials that most of us have used to help us quit and STAY quit! This is about making a DECISION to never put another cigarette in your mouth, mean it, and be committed to follow through on that decision. Also allow NO excuses AND hang in there for as long as it takes, no matter how uncomfortable you become.... This is about re-learning your life WITHOUT cigarettes....start changing your "normal" routine....because a smoker's routine revolves around cigarettes. You will be a nonsmoker so change how you start your morning so it doesn't revolve around cigarette breaks, etc. You CAN do this! ....http://digg.com/newsbar/topnews/Allen_Carr_s_Easy_Way_To_Stop_Smoking_Download_free_PDF

Congratulations on Day 1, Liz.

You said "I'm afraid I'll smoke".  Just remember that, if you DO smoke, it was your CHOICE.  The cigarettes are not more powerful that you are.  The cigarette won't just jump up into your mouth and start burning.  It will be because you made the decision to NOT QUIT.  It will be because you CHOSE to get ahold of a cigarette, you CHOSE to put one in your mouth, you CHOSE to find a source of fire and light the cigarette and you CHOSE to inhale the poisonous smoke.  Those are four choices.  And at any point while you are making those four deliberate choices...you can STOP and make a DIFFERENT choice.

It is VERY smart to not go to Mom's for lunch.  Stay away from any person or place where cigarettes are available.

Stay close to this site and blog a lot.  If you ever get to the point where you are about to cave in to a craving, blog the word "HELP!" and then wait for the support you need to start rolling in...

You CAN quit forever this time, Liz.  It's a choice.  And it's having a COMMITMENT to that choice.  We are here for you.

Congrats on Day 1!  You're prepared for a craving and you've got a plan to deal with it, good job. Take it one step further -- you're "afraid you'll smoke"?  Since smoking would take a full series of deliberate actions on your part -- choosing to stop at a store, choosing to buy a pack, choosing to open it, choosing to stick one in your mouth, choosing to light it, and finally choosing to inhale -- you really don't have anything to be afraid of, do you? Because this is entirely within your control!

You have chosen to quit, so choose to respond to a craving by ignoring it!  Choose to accept the pain of withdrawal, because that's the only way to get to the freedom on the other side!  You can do this!

Please write again later, let us know how you're doing!

Thank you for all the support!  I love that everyone pointed out it's a choice.  That will be my mantra for the day.  It also reminded me of one of my favorite scenes, from my favorite movie of all time... Star Wars!
