Day 1 over

Day 1 is over. Yay!!! I have been reading/looking at that Alan Carr’s “easy way to quit smoking” and I must admit I’m surprised how changing your thoughts of being deprived of smoking to being happy it’s over is helps...Don’t get me wrong, I had a few rough spells yesterday but just kept saying “I’m so glad I don’t smoke” over and over and chewed on a straw till the poor thing was an accordian but I did it...I DID IT!!!! Now on my way through today, not sure why I’m counting because I am now a non smoker but I need support and guidance through this new life style...43 years of that nasty thing was enough...God Bless and prayers for all of our new lives

When I first heard of the Happy Quitter I couldn't believe my eyes! I thought of Smoking Cessation as deprivation. James turned that around! How I Became a "Happy Quitter!"‌ Keep moving through today. You can do this!

Great attitude, Roj.  The Carr book really did change how I looked at smoking and at non smoking.  When I had a crave I remembered "Smoking is nothing.  All you do when you smoke is satisfy the craving you created when you smoked the last one."  And Allen Carr (and others) are on You Tube, so if you're having a hard time, you can find some powerful stuff about quitting on You Tube.  One of the things about staying close to EX is that you are naturally going to be thinking about smoking A LOT during this initial phase.  When I quit before this one (once for 3 years) I would spend days thinking constantly "I want to smoke, I want to smoke, I want to smoke . . .etc).  If you're on EX, reading or blogging, you're thinking about smoking but in a positive way for quitting.  I didn't figure that out for a while, but at least for me, it was true and really helpful. You're doing it!!

By counting each day you get to be victorious each and every day! It’s a giant accomplishment and in the words of Alan Carr, each day you get shout “Yippee, I’m a non-smoker”. Congrats on becoming an Ex!...lungs were never made for anything but air!

Congrats to you on your quit! I too found Carr’s book so enlightening! After 40 years of smoking, I could not believe how much I had been brainwashed to think I was getting something from smoking. With the book, which changed my thinking, and the support here - I quit! That was over 9 years ago! You can do this! And, as Thomas mentioned, you can do it as a “happy quitter”! The happy quitter he referred to is James who quit about 6 months before I did. His blogs helped me SO much! Check out his page at james41 - you can select “content” and then look at his blogs....you may want to sort them and go back to some of his early ones on how to get and keep that “happy quitter” attitude!

Welcome to the site! I see you are a fellow North Carolinian - I am in Greensboro. Take care and stick around!

Congratulations on completing day 1! It’s so tough at first. Stick with your plan, you’ll be so happy you did.

That book changed my life. Just like you, I saw every quit before this one as torture-- depriving myself of what helped keep me sane. When actually, it WAS the thing keeping me from being sane. There were and are days that are still sometimes difficult, but I now look at what I've gained, not lost. You have the right attitude. Welcome to the non-smoking party! Just remember when the days are hard, you just don't do that anymore. What can you do instead?

Cheers!

Congrats, rough spells, moments of toughness, but a majority of the time, you won't even notice it is gone! Keep it up!

About the Author
Started smoking to be cool and that was was 46 years ago with a break for boot camp and two pregnancies. Figured one cigarette with a cocktail wouldn’t hurt and now I’m diagnosed with emphysema, huh that didn’t work out as planned...you would think working in a hospital and watching your mother die of lung cancer would motivate me but apparently I’m a slow learner. Scared to quit but I know my life depends on it.
