Craves are like snakes...

During my recent hike through Congaree National Park, I realized that cigarette cravings are much like dealing with snakes in the wild. Let’s call them “  snakerettes” and think about coexisting with them…

On this journey of ours, there will be snakerettes. They live in this territory, after all, and are a natural part of it. Remind yourself that snakerettes do not hunt you down on purpose. They are not “out to get you”. They are simply   here and   there, and can be dealt with smartly.

Just the thought of a big snakerette can be scary. It can even keep some people from ever taking the hike. Just be aware of what’s in front of you (remember to look up, as well), and don’t be so afraid that you can’t even walk forward. Common sense and confidence can move you along safely.

We know that snakerettes prefer certain terrain, so we are wise to steer clear of these areas. Purposely walking into “smoke dens” is setting the stage for possible trouble, so stick to the proven path. (And if you find that you are always ankle-deep in snakerettes, you might want to get out of the bushes and choose a better path than the one that has lead you astray.)

Occasionally, a snakerette will slither out of nowhere, cross our path, and startle us. Stop in your tracks, take a deep breath, wait for a few moments, and let it pass. (It will, trust me. Always.) If need be, slowly step backwards and give yourself some room to maneuver from a different angle. But, whatever you do, don’t tease or poke the snakerette. And - in the name of all that is sane! - don’t snatch it up with both hands, wrestle it around your neck and face, stick a lit match up to its fangs, and scream and holler about being attacked and bitten and poisoned.

Only a crazy person would try to smoke a wild snakerette.

Leave it be, and get on with your journey. The mission is to smartly get through to the other side, not get trapped in a swamp full of slithering struggles.

This blog is incredibly clever, and I hope you repost it periodically!

BTW, when I read this line, "And if you find that you are always ankle-deep in snakerettes, you might want to get out of the bushes and choose a better path than the one that has lead you astray." I read, "if you find that you are always ankle-deep in snakerettes, you might want to get out of the ashtray." LOL!

Good one, Storm.  How about spiderettes?  I suppose THEY have a right to be there too...that does NOT include my house!

I have seen many snakes on hikes, usually they seem to come out of nowhere and go so quickly past me that I don't have time to get scared.

Good metaphor.

Eeeeekk!!!!

I hate snakes (thanks for the pic warning) so I'm sure I would freak out if I stumbled upon a snakerette.  They are out and about right now so we better keep our eyes open for them to pop up when least expected.  We'll just give them their space and keep on walking.

A thriller! Hummm...is it a parable or allegory? One things for sure, you wrote a magnificent story that holds much deeper meaning. You've brought us a fresh way to think of nicotine addiction.

That parable was brilliant!  "Leave it be and get on with your journey." Best approach I can think of! Let it be......

A good rule of thumb, always keep those snakerettes away from your face! They are poisonous!

Love your blog, Storm!

Storm you are so right on!!!  I can be talking to a smoker and see that snake right there and want to light it and I just don't do it.  Stepping away helps and your blog is awesome!!!!!

I LOVE THISSSSSSSS!!!!!!!  "Non-graphic - SOMEWHAT VISIBLE!!!!!"  HA@!  It's right there in your FACE!  Whadda mean "somewhat visible!???"  Kinda hard to miss.   A great analogy!  A hissing snakerette.  How can you be so wise after only 132 days??  How strong you are in your quit.  My hat's off to you.  Write more!  Please.  (What was that?  A rattlesnake?  The loops toward the end of it's body were really wonderfully weird.  Or was that just a trick of the light?  Do you know what kind it was?)

Yes.  When those snakerettes(cravings) appear from nowhere better "stop in our tracks, take a deep breath, wait for a few moments and let it pass."  And follow the law of addiction: do not take a single puff for one cigarrett is too many and a thousand never enough. Congrats on your 132 free days. florflor

Great Post!!  And the more experienced we get at dealing with these snakerettes, the easier it is to defeat them!  My quit date is in two weeks, I think I will keep referring back to your post for inspiration!! thanks for posting this!!

I will remember this when the next crave hits or one sneaks out & crosses my path, as one did last week while walking to the store. (well thought out)

I'm just coming back after getting careless with 5Mos.  I have to think every thing through.  It was easy to get bitten and hard to choose a new date as I've only smoked a few a day.  So easy to say it is not hurting me that bad. I DO KNOW BETTER. The child in me and I'm 76.

Creative !, you simbolizes all those cravings like snakes but it's a good point : hold your breath and let it pass to distract yourself.
