Description

I quit smoking 10 years ago when my daughter was born. Unfortunately, I didn't protect my quit and let an incident at work involving one of my employees cause me to blow it.  I had been quit almost two years at the time.  I picked them up after that and smoked for another 8 years.  I really had become disgusted with the habit and was ready to quit but could not seem to muster the will to quit again.  That is until a series of events happened that changed that.  The first event was when my son came to me two days before Christmas sat in my lap, looked me in the eye and said " you know what I want for Christmas?"  I said "What is that?"  He said "I want you to quit smoking, they said at school that if you didn't quit you would die and not get to see me grow up."  I told him I would work on it but could not guarantee he would get that for Christmas.

The more I thought about my answer to his request the angrier I got at myself.  I consider myself a good father and I would do anything for my kids except quit smoking.  Really??? Was I really that addicted to these expensive, socially unaccepted, cancer causing stink sticks.  Yes, I was!  When I realized that they controlled my life that much I decided I had to do something about it.  I had done it before and I could do it again.  So I set a date.  Jan. 1 came and went didn't quit.  Jan. 8th came and went, Jan 15th came and went didn't quit.  I wasn't serious I was just going to blow it off again and not do it.  That is when the second event in the series help push me toward my current quit.  My friend and I had been out hunting and had a successful day.  We were heading to the processor with the days harvest.  As we were driving he said when are you going to put those nasty things down.  I've known this guy for a while and he had never really said anything about it before so it surprised me.  He then said you know I don't normally say much about stuff but you know that is what killed my Dad and I hate to see it kill a friend of mine.  I wish you would put them down I would hate to see you go through that.  For some reason that hit a chord with me and got me thinking again.  So I set another date and of course missed that one, too.  At this point I was beginning to think I would never be able to quit.

The final event was a discusion with another friend of mine and a reminder about what was important in life.  He quit smoking two years ago and hasn't looked back.  This guy was a hard core smoker that seemingly quit with ease.  I asked what his secret was.  He simply said "you won't quit until you want to quit". Another observation was that if you think about it you want a cigarette just as bad while you are smoking it as you do when your done and right before you light up another.  I decided he was right I was ready and wanted to do this not just for me but for that little girl and little boy that want me to be around to see them grow up.  I set a date of Jan 30  stuck to it and have been smoke free since.
