October is "National Breast Cancer Awareness" month. This year we celebrate 25 years of awareness education and empowerment!

**Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among U.S. women, accounting for more than 1 in 4 cancers.

**An estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in American women during 2009. About 1,910 new cases of breast cancer are expected in men. In addition, an estimated 62,280 cases of in situ breast cancer (both DCIS and LCIS) are expected, with 85 percent being DCIS.

Let us all educate ourselves about the risks and preventative care available today! Make sure to see your doctor for routine mammogam exams. And how you too can exam at home. Women age 40 and over should get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years. Women who have had breast cancer or other breast problems or who have a family history of breast cancer might need to start getting mammograms before age 40, or they might need to get them more often. Talk to your doctor about when to start and how often you should have a mammogram.
