Baby carrots and chlorine: you buy in the supermarkets !

The following is information from a farmer who grows and packages carrots for IGA, METRO, LOBLAWS, etc.

No peeling, no washing, ready to eat. Office and industrial workers are snacking on them, and they even show up in kid's lunchboxes

The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are made using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a machine which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots . most people probably know this already.

What you may not know and should know is the following: once the carrots are cut and shaped into cocktail carrots they are dipped in a solution of acidic water and chlorine in order to preserve them (this is the same chlorine used your pool) since they do not have their skin or natural protective covering, they give them a higher dose of chlorine.

You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator for a few days, a white covering will form on the carrots, this is the chlorine which resurfaces.

At what cost do we put our health at risk to have esthetically pleasing vegetables which are practically plastic?

We do hope that this information can be passed on to as many people as possible in the hopes of informing them where these carrots come from and how they are processed.

Chlorine is a very well known carcinogen?

A carcinogen is a substance that is capable of causing cancer in humans or animals



True facts about carrot :

Carrots are a root vegetable

They were purple, red, white, and yellow, but never orange

Carrots are about 87% water.

Orange carrots get their color from beta carotene.

They have more beta carotene than any other vegetable.

One cup of carrots has 16,679 IU of beta-carotene

Harvard research found a strong inverse relationship between diets rich in carrots and the incidence of stroke

Women who ate five or more servings of carrots weekly had a 68 per cent lower risk of some cancers

Interesting about the baby carrots.  I worked as a paramedic for an internist for 24 years and one of our most interesting cases was a woman who went nuts over carrots, literally ate them everyday in every shape and form.  She was ORANGE! No lie, looked like a bad self tanner though all over. Don't know how this played in the leukemia that she contracted but the coincidence just amazed me.

Interesting, since I've been snacking on these since my quit. Can't wait for my garden.

Well I am a bit confused...the list says "carrots were never orange" which I must disagree with because I grow carrots in my garden and they are most defintely orange when I pull them up...

then a few lines down it states "orange carrots get their color from beta carotene.   

huh????  *shrugs*  LOL

Peggy to the rescue again!!!   I eat around a 2 lbs bag of these carrots a week.. I was getting a bit worried when I started to read here,  thanks Peggy    : )

SORRY THIS MADE PEOPLE UPSET! (NOT REALLY.) BUT THE FACT IS BABY CARROTS ARE DIP IN ACIDIC WATER AND CHLORINE. MOST OF THE FOOD WE DRINK AND EAT ARE ACIDIC WHICH MAKES THE BODY THE BEST ENVIRONMENT FOR CANCER GROW.

 

ONE PLACE WHERE YOU FIND INFOMATION MAY BE EXTREME. AND ANOTHERS("THE INDUSTRY") MAY UNDER STATE THE MESSAGE. I RESEACH MANY MANY SITE BEFORE POSTING.  THE TRUE IS BABY CARROTS ARE DIPPED IN CHLORINE.
