Been an EX for 28 days. Just received a hand-written note and a page about “Recovery of your body after stopping tobacco” from my VA pharmacist. Pretty nice of him to take a personal interest. I’ve been amazed by the VA people and how they take care of us. The page displays from 20 minutes after you quit to twenty years. I’m on the 1-3 months: my heart attack risk has started to drop and lung function is improving. Blood circulation has improved and walking is measurably better. (just got back from nearly a mile walk- couldn’t walk more than a few hundred yards before). The cough I had before is gone. Next will be the improvements from 1-9 months after you quit.   Looking forward to then and will keep this page to witness the 20-year improvements. Means a lot knowing some of us are in the same boat and others care.

It's good to hear that there are VA employees that go beyond to care for our Vets! Hooray for this person and Hooray for you, Jeep, for a Fantastic Quit Journey!

Jackie, Not much into links, hint, the guy mailed me a letter with a hand written note. Some of us learned to type before they had electrics and we’re barley able to communicate on this blog stuff. Just kidding. The page is from “Chapter 3: Nicotine Addiction”. Must be a book. I’m sure someone knows.

Was feeling pretty good until I read your 5th week predictions. Will need all my learned EX stuff to get me through. Better to be aware than not. What helps the most is concentrating on the health improvements I can see and feel. I envy folks that became EXs before their health went to hell.

Nothing necessarily happens in the 5th week. Just be aware the first 18 weeks are the time I've seen most give up. This is about changing your routine which is your life. Those are big changes and many lose sight of the goal.

I, too, envy people who quit before their health went to Hell...unfortunately,  I wasn't one of them. I have COPD and I never experienced that great improvement in my breathing after I quit.  I would hate to think where I would be if I HADN'T quit.  This site and the support from here really pulled me through.  I did not see a pulmonologist until I had been quit for well over a year, I was discouraged because of the level of my shortness of breath and the lack of improvement.  If you have COPD, it progresses whether or not you smoke, it is just much slower than if you continue to beat up your lungs.
