Almost a slip on the slippery slope

Today, I took a long ride into the western part of  New Hampshire to some of my favorite small towns. The foliage is at its peak, but is pretty dull this year, and a disappointment. My band has played gigs out in these towns, and as I drove along, I was reminded of how many little nooks and crannies I stopped at either before or after a trip to step outside of the car, and suck a butt. I had all those places planned so I could smoke, clean my hands of the stink using some sanitizer, and pop some spearmint gum in my mouth. I am a closet smoker--you know, the worst kind.

Being reminded of that brought along the old temptation to have just one--I have a strong association of the pleasure of smoking when I am on an "adventure." So it hit and wouldn't stop. I simply decided to keep driving and not stop at any store--that would have been fatal. Later, the urge subsided, and I stopped at a great little store that has all of this home cooked food--I didn't see any cigarettes there. I bought some delicious home made snacks, and got a cup of coffee ( the formula for it is local--damned fine cup of Joe). So I made it back home and here I am at the end of  my 57th day of my quit.  Whew!!!!! a close one. God do I hate that the urge still lingers.

About the Author
I am a writer, actually a playwright, who is oddly enough, converting one of my plays into a novel. I love to play the guitar and I am part of a group ( The Pine Hill Boys). I'm also an avid golfer, fly fisherman, and cross country skier. I have two Master's Degrees--one in American Studies, and the other in Administration/Supervision. I was in education for many years. I'm still an adjunct ( for fun) at a community college. Love it.
