I have personally never done the atkins diet but I know people who have and they did lose weight but when they stopped the diet (and you have to, it's just not something you can do forever) they put all the weight back on and then some. Sorry I am not of more help but that is all I know about it!!

I did Atkins!  It really worked!  Lost 30 pounds in three weeks!!  And it only took three weeks to gain 40 pounds back.  I have never been so sick of eating meat!  Eat moderate amounts of food every two to three hours.  That way your won't ever get really hungry and gorge yourself.  Stick to the basics...fruit, vegetables, high fiber foods, and moderate amounts of meat.  Don't be fooled by quick weight loss diets!  Eat moderately and exercise!  You really shouldn't lose more than one to two pounds per week on a healthy diet!  A good diet is a way to eat for the rest of your life!!!

Oh yeah, and drink huge amounts of water!  I have found that weight watchers styled diet is the most sensible and easiest to folow.  Teaches you how to restructure the ways you eat along with what you eat!  EXERCISE AND EAT WELL!!! You quit smoking which is huge!!  Now take the next step!  Focus on the diet!

I know exactly where you are coming from---the weight gain is why I usually go back to smoking. Yes---it's great that we are not smoking---but when I gain weight I feel CRUMMY and it makes the quit that much harder for me. I've never done Adkins or any diet so I can't help you on that. What I do know is that your metabolism slows when you quit smoking---that's why even if you eat the same or a bit less you may still gain weight from the quit. You have to "rev" your metabolism through exercise...and you can't just exercise the same amount as before the quit---you need to increase the exercise amount. Luckily---you don't have to do anything fancy---walking or running will do it  BUT----again, it needs to be more than before. I've done pretty well using this plan. It was HARD in the beginning when you aren't focused, don't have much energy, depressed over the quit....but by about the third month my energy level JUMPED---it was incredible! Then it was easy to continue and now with the weather getting nice (finally) it's great. If you have the means and the time to join a gym---great! They'll give you one on one help with the weight. STAY STRONG!!!!We quit smoking----we can handle a little weight gain. Let me know if YOU come up with any new ideas---I am always looking!!!

Some people develop high blood pressure and high Cholesterol from eating so much meat on the Adkins Diet.  Just remember not to completely deprive the body but everything in moderation.

I would agree with everything Sootie said.

Honestly, I am discovering that regular exercise goes perfectly with not-smoking. The additional fitness magnifies how great and rewarding it is to become an ex-smoker. I didn't start until my two year anniversary of qutitting smoking. Which I had started on my 2 week anniversary.

The funny thing: smoking does do some things to metabolism that prevent weight gain for some people, but it's all bad. Skinny smokers don't look skinny in a fit way because they are not fit. The toll on the cardiovascular system from smoking just relentlessly destroys your fitness, whether you are at the stage where you can feel it or not. Eventually you will have to start avoiding exercise completely because your breathing just won't allow it. Then you start finding that you are out of breath walking up a flight of steps.
