After 35 years I need to quit. I'm tired of wasting my money, plus I heard Obama gonna increase cigg tax again by 94 cents. Just can't afford it. My doctor and insurance company want me to also quit. And now I wanna quit. I'm ready. Hardest part will be while driving. I am a truck driver for my job. So here I am. I need some pointers on what to do while driving.

SING loud and realize you can carry a tune longer because you can breathe better - good luck!

In the car, I just keep singing to the radio or CD, or listen to talk radio, which keeps my mind busy.  I always have cold water with me because that really seems to help me, although you may have to make more rest stops than usual.  Sometimes, I just roll down the windows to enjoy the fresh air and take deep breaths.

Welcome to this site.  quitsmokingonline.com and whyquit.com will help you a lot with your quit.  Also, Allen Carr's book.  Someone should come along and give you a link to that.  If you do the reading, it'll help you to  make your quit so much easier.  Stay close to this site when you can.  If you need help, there are a lot of good people here ready to help anyone who needs and wants it.  Reading the blogs and comments has greatly helped me.

I know that, if I can do this, anyone can, and I'm on day 84 of being smoke free.  You can do this!!!

Here is a  link to the  free PDF of  the Allen Carr book Joy mentioned above:

It is an easty, entertaining read that contains a wealth of information on what nicotine does to your mind and body.  You also should do the readings on this site, on whyquit.com and quitsmokingonline.com.  The better informed you are, the better your chances of success!  So read, read, read!

After you have done the reading, you will be ready to make your plan, including what quit aid you will use, if any, and the crave buster supplies you think will work for you.  The idea is to DISTRACT yourself when a crave hits.   I took sips of cold water while driving, and sucked on hard candies and lollipops.    I also turned my music up loud and sang along!

Stay close to us here and ask for advice and support as you need them.  We all want to help you be successful!

My smoking cessation counselor had me switch to a lower nicotine cigarette, and instead of smoking while driving - I had a cigarette when I reached my destination.  Same as above, sucked on sugarless candy, etc.  I have a book that tells me which cigarette you can switch to.

Set you date, and then gradually prepare with things like when you crave, give yourself fifteen minutes to ride out the crave and then have one.  Don't smoke while driving - find alternate things to do.  Eat smaller ,more frequent meals (a heavy meal is a huge trigger for me), and drink LOTS of water to help flush your system.  If you are a caffeine drinker, gradually decrease your intake.  I promise, replacing it with water helps.

Above all - do as the girls state above.  I will confess I have no read the book, but i did what my smoking cessation counselor recommended with changing habits, yes - started on Chantix (which I know is not for everyone) and was directed to this website.  It has been my lifesaver in more ways than just assistance with quitting my addiction to cigarettes.

We are here for you once you make that committment and decision - for YOU!!

Sing loud and clear, drink water, listen to radio, take deep breaths, lots of deep breaths. And mostly, keep two hands on the wheel while driving. Drinving was a huge trigger for me and these are the things I do now while driving. I concentrate on driving, the most important thing! You can do this.
