When I read that people are going to try to quit or wish for luck, I wonder about their chances of success. This isn't just "give it a try." A successful quit takes an understanding of the addiction, planning, preparation, support and, above all else, a commitment to do whatever it takes to get past the early, admittedly difficult early days. The folks here can help with all but the commitment.
Staying busy and distracted in the beginning is key! Changing up routines, the people and places you associate with feeding the addiction are necessary..... just at the start. You can slowly get back to your previous routines, if you want to do that. The only caution I would add to that is about alcohol. Early in your quit and even down the road, it's good practice to limit consumption. It's easy when your brain gets cloudy for your quit commitment to become foggy, too.
It gets easier as you get some time under your belt. You will not always have to fight with the addict within. I promise that success at this will be worth every ounce of effort you put into it at the beginning. I promise!
