10 Hours and Counting...

Tomorrow, 1/1/19, is my quit date so at a minute past midnight I’m hoping to say I am a non-smoker…not one puff ever.  This all sounds good, but as I sit here thinking about it I find myself getting more and more nervous that I won’t be able to follow through. For two months now I have been reading everything, on this website and others, preparing to quit.  I’ve been on Chantix full strength for 2 weeks and I’ve got the patches ready to put on. (Do I put it on at bedtime tonight or in the morning?)  So, it would seem I have all the tools to quit, but the nerves and butterflies I have as well.  How do I get rid of them and feel that I can do this?  This is my 1st serious quit and it has been many years too long in coming.  Thanks in advance for your help.  Best regards, Rosemary

Your best bet is to NOT think about your quit - good to start changing your mind's direction  It is natural to feel uncomfortable - you are entering unknown territory...but just think about how WONDERFUL it is going to be to be free of this addiction.  Here is a blog I wrote especially for YOU:  /blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2018/12/30/to-our-new-years-resolution-quitters  You should probably put the patch on in the morning...some folks have had difficulty sleeping and vivid dreams when wearing it overnight. Tonight you must crush all remaining cigarettes and put them under running water..get rid of all ashtrays and lighters, too.  Be ready to change up your routines tomorrow....

You've expressed your fear very clearly. And you've asked a serious question...how do I believe I can quit. I know the first few days of quitting are a little odd and can be a bit heady, but you take it one bit at a time. Don't try to smober up forever, for the rest of your life on your first day--frame it as just for today, I am willing to quit smoking. This is your quit. The dependency is undone one day at a time. Please do not be surprised by a crave, simply accept that you've made up your mind to quit.

Possible inner dialog to say

NOPE

I don't do that anymore

Yes I can, Yes I am

Not today

Not right now

I've made up my mind to quit so today I do my best

You've accomplished other things in your life, so give yourself two thumbs up as you proceed to another challenge that you can handle!

congrats on your decision to quit.  Tomorrow when you wake up, make an inventory of what you want to get done around the house.  If you have a smoking area, wash that down.  In a few days, you'll be noticing smells you've been missing.  Just remember to slow down and trust the process.  take it one day a time and remember to breathe, just simply breathe, this too shall pass.......... you'll do great!!!!

Welcome to EX! Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking.  You won't regret it.  Know it takes time to relearn life as an EXsmoker.  We did this repetitive motion day in and day out for however long we smoked.  Nancy is right, before bed clean out your smoking things, make sure to look for all the straggly packs of smokes and get rid of everything. What helped me was I carried a water bottle with ice water and a straw, when the urge struck on would suck on my ice water with straw very refreshing might I say.  Have mints and gum aroun and in your car too.  I have to say be and say positive things about your quit.  LIke Yes I CAN, I don't do that anymore, you don't need that smoke.  You may not believe it in the beginning but the more you tell yourself positive things it can make it easier.  Come here and blog often and let us know how you are doing.  We are here for you. Yes YOU CAN!!  Here you go on this wonderful journey.

PS trust the chantix is working for you.  I used Chantix and it really helped me. YOU CAN CAN CAN do this!!

Thanks to all for your kind words of support.  Last night I went to bed at 9 pm & set my alarm for my last cigarette at midnight.  Imagine my dismay when I woke at 4:30 am.  I felt robbed...cheated out of my last cigarette ever. So I did what any good adict would do and smoked the last one then.  I felt like a cheat, but immediately slapped on a patch and got my gum ready just in case.  Now it has been almost 12 hrs and I am smoke free so far.  I know it's early, but it is not as bad as I had feared.  I know it can and probably will get worse, but you help me believe it can be done and I'm so appreciative of that.  Thanks again.  Regards, Rosemary
