Today when I signed in, I saw that I have 1234 days of freedom.  I am sure that people who are just starting their quits, look at that number and think…YIKES, REALLY?  I certainly would have early my quit.  I smoked for 47 years except for pregnancy breaks and some short term failed quits that I was not prepared for. (Talk about a BIG number). My strongest trigger was anger and, in truth, that was HARD to prepare for because I don’t get angry every day.  I did not know how to deal with my anger.  I wanted to stomp my feet and have a tantrum, I wanted the object of my anger to realize that he or she was stupid.  When I look at that, I laugh because those are the hallmarks of an adolescent mind that has not learned how to deal with anger one day at a time.  Just like quitting smoking.  I stopped my development when I started smoking, at age 17.  I had to learn how to deal with anger as an adult.  I could scream into a pillow, punch said pillow, allow myself to just tell the person that they had made me angry and then step away, the ONE thing I could NOT do was to SMOKE.  Once I knew that and accepted it completely, it really did get easier.  Smoking never did anything FOR me but I can tell you that it did lots TO me.  I have COPD, I am short of breath except at rest and even at rest, sometimes.   If I had not ever smoked, I would not be here.  I was tested along with several classmates in a biology class and I remember the professor RE-testing me because he could not believe the results.  He said, “You have REALLY big lungs.”  Just what every 18 year old college freshman wants to hear.  When I had that SAME test after quitting smoking, my lung capacity was dismal.  If you are quitting smoking and struggling, keep in mind that your lungs will thank you, you children will thank you, your partner will thank you, you will thank yourself.  Come to think of it, YOU are the only one who matters…you will find out things about yourself that you really never had a chance to discover when you were smoking…GOOD things.  You will be able to embrace your new self with a confidence that you can now grow in to.  Hang in there, it gets easier, I promise.

BIG congratulations to you, elvan‌!! 1-2-3-4 what a great number to celebrate!! I'm amazed at times how I find things in common with others here - anger, seems I learned 2 ways to deal with it when I was growing up - either you explode (like my father did) or you stuff it inside (like my mother did). My father smoked, my mother didn't. Seems I chose to a) smoke, b) explode at times and c) stuff it inside other times.

Enough of that - you have helped me more than you know and I do appreciate it very much! Many more DOFs to you!!

dwwms‌  It's HARD to plan for anger but anger IS going to happen.  I found that I stuffed it down so far that when I started to express myself after I quit, I surprised some people...including myself.  My mother did not smoke but she DID get angry and I was a really good target for that anger.  My father stopped smoking when I was 9, I think.  I did not learn how to deal with anger because no one around me dealt with it in socially approved manner.  I stuffed every feeling that I was afraid would be unacceptable...anger, sadness...I was terrified of crying because THAT was not acceptable in my home growing up.  After I quit and I was going through a particularly difficult time I realized that it was okay to cry and if it made other people uncomfortable, that was not MY problem.  I am so glad that I have that freedom now in so many ways.

I am so happy to help you in any way that I can, Doug.  I think you are doing an amazing job.

Wow, thank you for inspiring me to stay quit dear Ellen!!  I also smoked for 47 years.  You are showing me it can be

done!! 1 2 3 4!!!  What awesome numbers!!

One foot in front of the other.  I never learned what to do with anger either, but usually I stuff it deep down.  I will pound a pillow tho, or my bed if I need to.

Christine13‌ Anger is a tough one to prepare for...it kind of reminds me of when I go to the doctor and they ask me EXACTLY where my pain is...it shoots down my leg but it is not ALWAYS there...they will ask if it is the inside of the leg or the outside of the leg and what part of the foot does it affect?  I don't know, I do know that it HURTS but I can't describe it when it's not there.  I found one thing that also helped with anger was to write it down...in a letter that I never sent.  If I go back and look at those letters, most of the time, they make me laugh because whatever I was angry about was so not worth expending all of my energy.  After a while, I shred those letters because they are so ridiculous.  We are sort of trigger happy with anger in the early parts of our quits...it's actually funny to look back on.

You are doing great...keep going one day at a time!

What an inspiration you are Ellen!  This blog is so powerful, words of appreciation defy me; all I can say is thank you so much!  Being a numbers person you just know this got my attention immediately and once I started reading - just like a really good book, I couldn't stop

My Ellen, congratulations on 1234 (now 5) days!!! It makes me think of a song by Ozomatli called 1, 2, 3, 4. Look it up if you can (I'm at work, so I can't). You'll love it, even if just the beginning. It's such a fun song.

P.S. I'm writing you tonight!!!!

Congratulations.  And thank you for your incredible support in my first week of smoke-free living.  Glad this site prompted me with your blog. I'm still not entirely sure how this site all works!

elvan

Brenda_M  I found more than one song but I am not sure that any of them are the right one...there is one by Pitbull, another is a nursery rhyme, and there is one by Chennai Express.  I tried looking up by the name with the numbers 1,2,3,4 and then one, two, three, four and the name but there are way too many songs for me to figure out what I am doing.

I would LOVE it if you write me tonight!  That will give me something to look forward to!  I am actually at 1236 days today, thank EX for keeping track for me.

XOXO,

Ellen

hiphouse  I am not always sure I've got the site figured out either but I plod along and find things as I go.  I am so happy to have been able to support you.  We have ALL been there, there are no short cuts and the only way out is through...I am full of one liners from this site.

You are going to get this and it WILL get easier.

Today is my day 25 and I also stepped down in my patch from 21 to 14 mg today and I was really having a bad afternoon and evening until now.  Reading this post helped me so much. It is very encouraging and I plan on hanging in there as you said.  CONGRATULATIONS!!!  What a wonderful number!  One day at a time really does work.

Brenda_M  I love it, Embrace the Chaos...it's pretty heavy duty, now I will think about that whenever I count, LOL.

stephanie1067  I am so happy that this blog helped you.  Part of the "magic" of EX has to do with the connections we make here, the way that things come together.  It was not an easy journey, there were certainly some pretty difficult challenges but I came here, I blogged, I read, I paid attention to those ahead of me and I am SO GLAD that I did.  One day at a time is sometimes too long and we have to go back to one minute at a time or one happening at a time....we learn to deal with things as we experience them when we are smoke free.  I know it sounds like a cliche but, seriously, if I can do this, ANYONE can.  One day, one moment, one step at a time...sometimes they have to be baby steps.  One of my favorite phrases comes from OldBones-Larry‌ who says, "One step and then another, will get you to where you want to be."  You are DOING this Stephanie!
