Calf Pain

Jump to solution

Smoke free for a month! I've been experiencing a tingling, muscle spasm in my right calf area when I'm relaxing at the end of the night.  I tried to quit smoking 4 years ago and I experienced this same thing.  It actually made me so paranoid I ended up going to a specialist that could find nothing wrong.

Has anyone else experienced this or have an idea on what causes it?

Interesting.  I have calf cramps and arch cramps at times as well.  I’ve wondered if they were a vitamin deficiency of some kind.  I know that Vitamin B and Vitamin D can run low for me.   Did they do any blood work?

@Amysladek Welcome to the Ex and congrats one  month smoke free.

There can be some unusual side effects when quitting smoking.  Some are common and others are unexpected.   This is what I found.  Hope this helps.

When you quit smoking, your heart rate, blood pressure, and circulation will begin to return to normal. This may cause a tingling sensation in your hands and feet. This is usually nothing to worry about and will pass with time.

For stiffness or pain in your legs, take a hot bath, get a massage, rub Tiger Balm where it hurts, or elevate your legs while you sit or lie down. Leg pains may take several weeks to ease. Tingling in your fingers and toes, caused by improved circulation, will generally go away on its own within a couple of weeks. Does quitting smoking make your muscles ache?

  • Yes, quitting smoking can lead to muscle ache and joint pain. This is often referred to as the "quitter's flu" and can also include symptoms such as fever, stuffy nose, coughing, and lack of energy.

If it continues to be bothersome, I would check with your doctor again.

Stay close and reach out if you  need some support.

I saw this and have been interested in seeing what others said as well . Many have said here they get muscle spasms . Are they quit related , smoking related hmmm interesting question .. I am going to do a search see if anything on this topic by drs on smoking and muscles .

I too have had horrible Charlie horses in my calves and feet but they think mine are medication related . Mark , you mention deficiencies , by blood testing it was found I am also deficient . Vitamin D levels are almost nil , very very very low . They say magnesium can help spasms , and seems to help many but hasn’t made a huge difference in mine . Drink lots of water was suggested to me because of the medication .
I hope you both find resolutions , I know they are so painful . Don’t know how many nights I try to walk them out , I shutter at the thought of another . I get them often . Interesting @Amysladek , you mentioned both times you’ve quit . Smoking would be more likely the culprit causing a change when quitting if it were related to smoking .. but I’ve never heard a correlation of these spasms being related to quitting smoking ..  speak with the dr more .. only other correlation I note with mine is my dad had them extremely bad as well and took vitamins , so genetic ?

Yes, I definitely see a correlation.  Maybe it's cause I'm actually exercising more too 🤔

About a month after I quit, I went out socially, came home and had leg cramps that lasted from about 2AM until that same afternoon.   My calves and ankles cramped for hours.  This had never happened to me before, or after, totally random and I would love to know WHY.

When I was growing up, my dad (not biological) used to get alot of leg cramps.  Back then, he took quinine pills for cramps.
