When I create a discussion

Jump to solution

I normally choose to do it from the pencil drop down menu list.

When I open up create a new discussion, the video icon does not show.

I currently have to post the discussion and then come back in edit to see the video icon and then I can add the video and post.

The only problem is, the person who helped prove it IS crazy!  lol

Thanks, I feel the pencil, then the discussion with the video enabled should work from anywhere. A discussion is a discussion from any location and should always have the video enabled PERIOD.

I'm with the big flea on this.  🙂

While I understand what you're saying, the video option allows embedding, uploading and recording to the site. Since including a video is not permitted globally across the site the Pencil button on the home page doesn't allow you to include a video. If it did and you created a post, included a video and then chose the location this could create a poor user experience if you chose a location where uploading/recording a video is not permitted. There is no way to separate embed a video from upload/record option.  Jive is a widely used tool. Some customers of theirs have some highly customized permissions configurations.  For this reason so that the software matches the broadest audience of their customers they have this functionality configured the way they do. It's working as designed.

I could ask them if they could somehow "reload" the toolbar once a location is found to check the permissions to see if additional things are permitted for the intended location of the content however I can't guarantee they would do this or if it would be economically feasible for them.  I would guess, though I'm sure they have data to support it, that most of the content (blogs/discussions/documents) is created within the sub-community where the post will exist and not through the pencil icon on the home page.  Most communities have a Call to Action Button that says Ask a Question or Start a Discussion.  The Pencil button within the sub-community is probably the next most used function and lastly the Actions menu is probably third.

I always start everything from the drop down pencil.

I'm still with the big flea.  🙂

JonesCarpeDiem‌ There is nothing wrong with using the Pencil but you should go into "where" you want it to post before using the pencil. This will more likely ensure that you see the video icon.  It's not a bug though and was designed this way.  Possibly they will add a solution as I have suggested but it would need to be other Jive customers asking for the same thing.  In all honestly, unless there is something compelling utilization-wise data that says people create most posts from the home page, I'd be surprised if this would change in the near future.  I'll put the idea in though.

I personally don't use the pencil icon very often, unless to write a status update. I'm normally using the Actions or the Call to Action buttons when I create something.

Mark I just realized that Discussions and Blogs are both part of "CONVERSATIONS."  For some reason all these many months I've thought only Discussions were.

I wish we had the video option in the blog creation tools as well.

I'm tending to write more discussions than blogs for that reason alone.

I don't want my options limited when my mind is working.

You can embed a video when you're creating a blog in https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/community/conversations?sr=search&searchId=86b97d17-0271-4775-b33...‌ from https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/community/conversations?sr=search&searchId=86b97d17-0271-4775-b33...‌. If you create a blog from the home page or your profile (which defaults to your personal blog) the video option will not be there. I have an idea why this is happening but I need to confirm as I don't want to guess.
