Link Appearance Differences, why?

Jump to solution

I was looking for a blog of mine and so did a search for it.  When I found it, I clicked on the title.  It brought the blog up.  I then went to copy and paste the browser address because I wanted to reference it in a comment to someone else.  It appeared as follows when I pasted it in.

https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/positive-affirmations-and-support/blog/2017/10/24/its-gonn...

I didn't understand why it did not show up as simply the blog title, with an an active link as is usually the case when you copy and paste a link here.

So I went to the group in which the blog was published, accessed it that way,  and then copied the browser address.

When I pasted it in it showed up like this:    https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/positive-affirmations-and-support/blog/2017/10/24/its-gonn...  Which is what I wanted in the first place.

In that case the address is actually:  ..../excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/positive-affirmations-and-support/blog/2017/10/24/its-gonna-be-okay  (without the question mark and  comment ID #.)

So it's a slightly different address than the first one.

After much experimentation I finally figured out the anomaly.

When I did the original search for my blog I knew it had the words "dragon fly" in it (couldn't recall the title).  When I clicked on the Link shown below, that's when I was taken to the blog.

So I think I've figured out that with this symbol:   (with the little white square in the upper right corner) it means it's a COMMENT and if you get to the blog that way and copy and paste the browser address, it will NOT show the title of the blog, it will only show the address.  Even though when you're on the blog page itself it LOOKS exactly the same visually no matter how you got to it.

I find that confusing.  I suspect others might also (maybe 1?  LOL).   I had that question until I figured it out, but it might just help someone else going through the same thing. Mark

Yes, you’re correct.

The simple root post urls will resolve into the title of the blog post or discussion.   You can in some cases use a comment level url or permalink to a comment on a discussion and it will resolve to the title with a discussion comment icon.  It seems however since blog posts were created differently that the blog comment url doesnt get the same internal link treatment with the blog comment icon that you have in your screenshots.

This is also happens with search results and other urls that contain long sets of characters.  They’re too complex for it to pick the right icon.

If I want a nice title to show up, I left click on the link (while in edit/comment mode) and choose the first box on left from the pop up and edit the text in the text to display box.    Then save and it updates.

I doubt there will will be any additional work to extend the internal link function unfortunately.  But I like your suggestion.

I enjoy solving my own questions and problems, if possible.  Keeps this old brain active and alive!  Maybe I'll be a computer programmer in my next life!

Except I have no idea what you mean by

If I want a nice title to show up, I left click on the link and choose the first box on left from the pop up and edit the text in the text to display box.

When I left click on ANY link it just takes me to the linked page.  You must have magic in your mouse.  Uh...oh my, that could be taken in so many humorous ways....   uh...  cracked myself up and am on the floor!

When you're creating a post and you click a link with left button it brings up a menu like this.

Edit Link, Unlink, Bare URL(which removes the page title), Smart Title (which replaces the link with title if it can detect it, some links are too specific though) and View Link in new tab.

After you post, yes it will take you to the link by left clicking.

Yeah they added something into the link tool. I'm trying to understand the benefit.  It is somehow thinking that relative links are external links and wants to add the https which will break it.

Changing Profile Quit Date?

Re: How do I get my quit date to show on the community?

These three were inserted by doing content mention. Thus icons were used

Some things don't have comment level permalinks. They only have the root post like status messages so you can't link to a specific comment.

Content mention?  Never heard of it.  Where does one find "content" mention?

The first one takes me directly to the blog title.  The other two take me further down the blog into the comment section.  You can actually somehow put a link to a comment/response???  I couldn't find the path to that.  Perhaps it's just the CM that has that magic mouse power in that case?
