Oral gratification

When does this oral gratification stop?  I am at day 26 and cannot believe how much I need a toothpick, straw or munch on sunflower seeds all day long.  I have been smoking for 50 years and now using patch and gum.

Welcome to the community!

You smoked for 50 years!  You can't expect to get over the triggers and associations quickly.  If you are only chewing on straws, toothpicks and eating sunflower seeds,  I would call that a WIN!  26 days is GREAT and you deserve kudos for THAT!  If it is concerning to you, you might try to put use of them off just a bit and get busy doing something else to occupy your mind.  This quit thing does require some effort on your part in the beginning.

The important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This easy and entertaining read provided a world of good information about nicotine addiction, most of which I was not aware.  I credit it in large part with my success at quitting.   You can search for it online or at your local library.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.

Welcome to EX.  PLEASE pay attention to everything that YoungAtHeart‌ has shared with you.  I smoked for 47 years, have now been quit for over 6 1/2 thanks to this site and education about nicotine addiction and the amazing support from people who knew exactly what I was going through.  Stay close to the site, do not put too much pressure on yourself about the oral fixation...it's a LOT better than smoking.

Hello, fellow Iowan!  I've been to many cross country meets hosted by Ballard HS at the golf course!  I live an hour southwest of Des Moines.  I smoked for 47 years and will celebrate my two years free of cigs this coming Saturday. It CAN be done.  I carried cinnamon sticks in my car for a long time and still chew mint or cinnamon gum.  But I can breathe a lot better than I did when I was a smoker.  Use whatever you need for the oral satisfaction, just do not put a cigarette in you mouth and smoke.  You can do this!

Welcome and congrats on 29 days now.   Nothing wrong with using those aids for awhile.  As long as it's not a cigarette, don't worry about it for now.   Straws were one of my lifesavers.  I don't even remember when I quit using them.  It just happened and it will happen for you.

Keep moving forward one day a time.
