Give and get support around quitting

Hello to all this morning.

Today is my first day of involvement so I'm a little scared. I really need to quite smoking, I've already had 5 heart attacks and one open heart surgery, 11 stents in my heart and one stent in my aorta. I'm a 73 year old male and want to live a longer life, I'm married with many children, Grand Children and several Great Grand Children, I believe that is reason for me to quit smoking.

Sincerely, Raymond Herron

Well Hello Raymond.  I'm glad that you have joined the ranks of non-smokers or soon-to-be-non-smokers!!  There are so many reasons to quit smoking.  More money in your pocket to spend on those children and grandchildren of yours!!  No more surgeries possibly.  As you stated to live longer.  There's a lot of homework on your part to do.  There's a lot of reading to educate yourself on this site and the 'Elders' will come along shortly and give you the links to that material.  This reading will make your quit easier.  Much easier.

Welcome to this site.

Welcome to EX,   Raymond Herron,  You have come to the right place for support in quitting smoking. Staying is quit is doable but it takes a lot of work.   Education and preparation is the key to a successful quit.   Start first by educating yourself on addiction to nicotine. Foundation For A Successful Quit‌ this blog will help give you a jump start.  Also, it is advisable to read Allen Carr's Easyway to Quit Smoking which can be found on pdf on the web.  Another good site to get info is www.whyquit.com.  There are several articles to read.  Nicotine 101 and Freedom From Nicotine My Journey Home.  If you have any questions you can do a search with the magnifying glass type any keywords and research.  If you have any questions just ask and give up the opportunity to respond.  To learn more about quitting go to ‌My EX Plan | BecomeAnEX  to get help on navigating the site go to. Community Help.  Again Welcome, there is more to come.

Welcome to EX...yes, you absolutely REALLY NEED TO QUIT SMOKING...I cannot believe that you still do after all you have been through. Pay close attention to what JACKIE1-25-15‌ has shared with you, she has giving you good advice.  I would also suggest reading a blog written by JonesCarpeDiem‌ https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/thread/6040-my-welcome-to-new-members-12-years-of-watching   You didn't say how many times you tried to quit smoking...am I wrong to assume that you DID try?  Quitting is not an event, it is a one day at a time journey and it is NOT easy.  The more you understand this addiction, the better, the more you plan for what you will do INSTEAD of smoking, the better prepared you will be.  Read blogs, comment, ask for advice and LISTEN to it.  You CAN do this and we all want you to succeed at quitting, we cannot do it for you but we can help you if you accept our help.  Accept that smoking does nothing FOR you, only TO you and it sounds like it has done quite a lot of that.  Stay close to the site,

Ellen

Hi Raymond

You don't have to want to quit but, you do have to decide to quit and then, be willing to acknowledge you've quit so you aren't fighting with yourself.

Raymond, welcome to the Ex.  Someone's first response with all your heart issues might be "why is this person still smoking".  You're no different than anyone else.  We're addicted.   Educate yourself about this addition and prepare by before setting a quit date.  Have you thought about whether you want to do cold turkey or use NRT?  You have plenty of suggestions already on what to read.  If you need help, we're here for you.

Welcome to our community!

It IS time for you to quit.  We can help.  The reading I will recommend and the tips I will give you have helped many to be successful.  I hope you will do it ALL!

The important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for it online or at your local library. Here's a link to a video here on the site which describes nicotine addiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpWMgPHn0Lo&feature=youtu.be.

You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmoking.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance. You should also do the tracking and separation exercises recommended here on the site.

After you have completed the recommended reading, it will be time to make an informed choice of the quit aid, if any, you will use. If you go that route, I personally recommend the aids that don't let the addict control the dose such as the available prescription drugs or the patch. If used properly, gum, lozenges and inhalers are fine, but they need to be used only as a last resort.  I have seen folks become addicted to them if they substitute them for every cigarette they used to smoke - just trading one addiction for another.  I do not recommend the e-cigarette for three reasons: 1) the vapor has been compared to the polluted air in Bejing on a bad day, 2) they just provide another nicotine delivery system while continuing the hand to mouth smoking motion, and 3) the batteries can spontaneously catch on fire. . But – any method that you think will work well for you will be best for you.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:
 https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2013/02/25/100-things-to-do-instea...

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!

I've responded to each and every email you've sent about patches. Are you getting the messages from the community? Please login and respond. The community is here and ready to support you.

If you are in need of patches, please contact your state's quit line via their website or by calling 800-QUIT-NOW. I looked at your account and it doesn't appear that you're eligible to receive them from us since you don't have a health plan provider or employer who participates in https://www.theexprogram.com.
