What are levels?

What are levels? I stumbled upon them and I see I'm a level 1. Not that it matters at all, I was just wondering what they are. Thanks!

There are two kinds of levels.  General levels as associated with Points (Minihorses's Rewards profile), as seen on the right, and then those associated with Mission Badges, as seen on left, which are more about the kind of participation you have on the community.
