I used the patches as directed and completely weaned off. There is nicotine withdrawals no matter what, but I found them less intense stepping down with patches. My intent was to beat smoking and nicotine addiction so I followed the directions and became smoke/nicotine free. However, my partner who has severe COPD will probably use the patches the rest of his life. He has his doctor's and my blessing as it is the smoke that was killing him. One understands and accepts that staying addicted to nicotine presents a risk of returning to smoking. Each has their own reason. And better health is the final goal.
