It amazes me that people who populate lyrics all over the internet mimic each other
AND THEY ALL GET IT WRONG.
Here's an example
Eyes full of sorrow, never wet? Change that to "never wept" and it actually makes sense. 
I'm really glad he got back so quickly!! He wrote it, so there it is, different ideas for different poets ( song/lyric writers are poets , my favorite being Smokey ... or Carole... depends on the day of the week I guess 
).
Not to belabor (or belabour since he's British ) a point ... he was 20-21 years old when he wrote it. Perhaps with maturity and evolution as a songwriter, he might have written it differently . Or not.
