What about cigars?

We sometimes are asked if cigars are safer than cigarettes. There has been more study into the health consequences of cigarette smoking, but there is enough strong evidence about the health problems caused by cigar smoking to answer no, cigar smoking is a very substantial risk to health.

The smoke from cigars contains the same toxic chemicals as the smoke from a cigarette. Compounds in the smoke can cause cancer, heart disease, lung diseases as well as oral and dental disease, which has been linked specifically to cigar smoking.   Second hand smoke from cigars increases the risk for childhood asthma, ear infections, and upper and lower respiratory infections in children.

LIke cigarettes cigars contain nicotine, the addictive ingredient in tobacco.  A single full size cigar can contain as much nicotine as does a pack of cigarette.  The nicotine from cigars is usually absorbed through the lining of the mouth, which can certainly cause addiction. Switching from cigarette smoking to cigar smoking can be particularly harmful because you might inhale cigar smoke the way you inhaled cigarette smoke and possibly ingest much more nicotine than from a cigarette and many more toxins than from a single cigarette.

Although the specific health effects from a single occasional cigar aren't so clear, there is no safe form of tobacco, and the only safe level of cigar smoking is none at all.

A single small size cigar can contain the equivalent of a whole pack. (black and mild)

It is absorbed by the lining of the mouth the same way as "chew" so even if you don't inhale, you are still taking in the nicotine.

I have known three people who "quit smoking" and substituted cigars.  All three of them had very short-lived quits and went back to smoking cigarettes.

I traded in my cigarettes for Black Max's once, 50 cigarettes a day for 5 black Max a day. This was not helpful. In two months, I was coughing blood and went back to cigarettes! The best thing I have done is to just quit all of it! Thanks for this useful information!

Funny you should mention cigars. I didn't smoke for 10 months. I have been smoking menthol's from the age of 13. I am in my 60's. So, 10 months off of menthol cigaretts is a huge deal. Pipe tobaco cigaros that are little; Why not? All natural, nothing like a cigartte. So one won't hurt. Wrong agian! gateway to smoking.

Today I am on my first day of not smoking cigaretts  4 months after trying a few cigaro's. It's harder than the first time.

Withdrawl is all consuming and I am uncompfortable in my own skin. My confidence in my abiliyt to make a rational decision is questionable. So,here we go. Back in to the pain of trying to live without cigaretts. Again!

This is one of the most  horrible addiction. Replacment mints, gum, Vape. Nothing works. What works is going thru it. Stop all of  it.

No other way. Be happy about that you are set free for prison. Because it is. If you can get to that attitude your good. I'm not there yet. Don't give up.
