Stop, Move, Enjoy!

Many people who stop smoking are understandably concerned about gaining weight.  Stopping smoking can be a springboard into a happier and healthier way of being, and can be a triple win by using it as an opportunity to become more physically active and really enjoy the taste of nutritious good foods.

Just today I spoke with a person who recently completed the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center’s 8-Day Residential Treatment Program.  He delightedly told me that in the past three weeks he has lost five pounds and has found more energy to engage in things he enjoys.  He is riding a bicycle or swimming on alternate days five days per week.  He described feeling a bit tired but also exhilarated and energized after these activities.  He also expressed surprise at his experience in eating.  Since stopping smoking, nutritious foods like fruits and salads taste sweeter and richer.  He’s taken to the practice of mindful eating in which he turns off the television and tries to pay attention to each bite, to really taste his food and to not put another bite in his mouth until the previous one is swallowed.

This is just one man’s experience and yours might be different.  I hope that it can encourage you to think about stopping smoking as a door into enjoying things that you previously might have taken for granted.  What ways do you enjoy being physically active?  Do you garden, walk, swim, go to the gym?  Now that you stopped smoking you may find that these activities are more enjoyable.  Regular activity burns calories, distracts, fills time voids, and reduces cravings.  Try old foods with a new perspective.  Are your taste buds changing?  Can you take a minute to savor each bite rather than rapidly gobble your meal?  Stopping smoking can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be drudgery.

An 8-day residential treatment program?! THAT is exactly what's needed in so very many other places, too, for so very many desperate strugglers! (Sorry, I'm off topic...but that one factoid just blew my mind.)

I think while we were still smoking, we kind of didn't think about being healthy because - really - what was the point if we smoked?

This journey from addiction helps us to see that we CAN be healthy and I think most of us start a healthier lifestyle as a result.  I swim laps in the summer (and some of the winter) and walk when I don't. I also have many flower gardens that I tend in their season, and a yard I care for.   I have always done that when I have been healthy enough.  Health issues caused by smoking ALMOST took them away from me - but I worked really hard to not let them.  I am back swimming laps and today took a 30 minute walk back in the park by the river.

I could not imagine a life without being active.  For me - that IS life!

I have said since I was in my 30's that if I could enter a treatment program I believed I could quit. I never believed there would be one. I wonder if insurance will cover it. I think it would pay for itself.

I too have increased my fruit and veggies as they have so much flavor. I didn't eat very much of either of those when I was smoking and I still don't get enough protein. but, as with your client, I have lost 9-10#.

Thanks for sharing

My partner has supported me every step of the way  in my journey. After bilateral mastectomies for breast cancer (DCIS) that did not require radiation, chemo or other nasty drugs Thank You Father, I did find I still had some cancer cells floating around that I needed to get gone!

I am a firm believer in eating organic, clean foods and really set my goal of detoxifying my body before my next blood work. My honey, who has the worst diet ever, told me that whatever it took, he had my back. Then he made a classic statement that really hit me between the eyes: "I'm all for you eating all your good foods and don't worry about how much it might cost. But it just doesn't make sense to me that doing all that you continue to put toxins in your body by smoking."  Rang my bell for sure-----

So here I am, only 10 days quit, but not smoking.

@AbasKid... Wow just Wow how amazing are you. Thanks for sharing your experience. This post has me thinking. I was just struggling through the quit and not worrying too much about weight gain felt the important thing was to NOT SMOKE. But I can see it would be wonderful to reach the stage of feeling better, just feeling healthy, I had already gained weight while smoking from my level of inactivity, so it would be wonderful to get going again. Live life again. After many life struggles Which is nothing compared to others. I realized I need to stop struggling and start living a clean life. Thanks for this post.
