“People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.” - Zig Ziglar
When it comes to making a life change, whether it’s losing weight or stopping smoking, motivation is a powerful driver. In the quote above, Zig Ziglar makes an important point in a humorous way – motivation can naturally wane over time unless we find ways to refresh it.
Imagine the change process as a road trip. The goals we set represent our final destinations, our mind and bodies become the vehicles that get us there. In this analogy, motivation is the fuel that keeps us moving toward new milestones along our path to change. And just like any car, we need to make brief stops and replenish the fuel along the way to maintain progress toward the goal.
There are many ways to keep motivation active and fresh. Here are five strategies to consider when mapping out your journey:
· Write down your reasons for being smoke-free and review them frequently
· Read and seek out others’ success stories
· Reward yourself for achieving smaller goals along the way
· Focus on taking things just one day at a time – “I choose not to smoke today.”
· Surround yourself with positive support
Maintaining motivation does not need to be hard. Take a little time, think about what things energize you, and find ways to incorporate them into your day. As we can all learn from one another, consider sharing your experiences and successes with other tobacco users in your life and the Ex community.
