Environmental “Vaping”

E-cigarettes are rapidly becoming popular substitutes for cigarette smoking both among adolescents and adults.  Their sales have doubled each year since 2008.

The e-cigarette user puffs a vapor containing nicotine and other products through a battery-operated device that looks similar to a traditional cigarette.  There are very few studies that have documented either their safety or effectiveness for helping smokers to stop smoking.  Although the smoke emitted from the device and inhaled and exhaled by the smoker (termed: “vaping”) is odorless, Roswell Park Researchers recently conducted studies to evaluate the thirdhand nicotine exposure from these devices.

Thirdhand smoke is defined as the particles and chemicals emitted by a smoldering cigarette that deposit on any surface in the near proximity of the burning cigarette.  This includes clothing, furniture, windows, rugs, drapes, tables and windows.

The researchers noted after an e-cigarette was “vaped” with a syringe in an exposure chamber, nicotine levels on five different surfaces of the smoking chamber were measured including glass, floors, walls, windows , wood, and metal.  Increased nicotine residues were noted on all five surfaces, but they noted that the floor and windows had the greatest increase in nicotine residue.

Future research will likely need to explore the risks of exposure to carcinogens from e-cigarette “vaping”.

Such data strengthen the rationale to ban vaping in public areas.  Already many US cities and airports have banned “public vaping”.

This E-Cig in my opion is a buch of --. Its big business. The company does not care what it does to the person using there product. Do you think they are going to pay for medical cost due to illness related to "vaping" ? Think we all know the answer to that question.

I hope they do ban the use of E-cig in public places. I am free of nicotine for 1330 days and dont want to be exposed to vapor from e-cig.

Thank you for posting this. Ecigs are big tobacco's way of keeping their pockets filled!

Ladybug--7-3-12

I received notice from my employer group medical insurance provider that there will be a premium surcharge ($25.00 a month) to anyone who uses tobacco products effective 7-1-14.   This includes, but is not limited to cigars, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, and other tobacco products.

The kicker:  Tobacco products do not include tobacco cessation aids approved by the FDA or E-cigarettes (until their tobacco-related status is determined by the FDA).

Use is defined as any of these tobacco products used within the past two months but also does not include religious or ceremonial use of tobacco.

The wheels turn slowly but they are so very politically driven as always.

I know I wonder about the "flavors" and what burning them do to a person.  But again, if a person can quit this way-- I just hope it gets regulated and not because of lobbyists and the sellers, but to see if it's better than the alternative.

My kids were into hookah pipe smoking. They finally realized how it is dangerous for the lungs. Probably much worse than e-cigs. I think e-cigs are stupid. I'm not going to use them. I'll still be getting nicotine. You can get different levels of nicotine or no nicotine but I'm not convinced that they aren't bad for you, even the non-nicotine type.

i HAVE READ EVERY COMMENT, AND WHAT'S WORSE CIGARETTES OF WATER VAPORS?

i smoked for 40 years, this device , with some pretty good flavors help me toi STOP, and Yet, there are those who  call it evil, stupid,.

I HONESTLY THINK THAT DOCTOR'S HUNT'S ARTICL;E IS SHAMEFUL AT BEST. THIS IS A SYSTEM THAT WORKS BETTER THAN PATCHES, DRUGS, AND ALL YOU WANT TO SAY, IS THAT NICOTINE WAS ON DIFFERENT SURFACES, ...WHAT, WHERE IN THE HECK IS THE BIG TIME DANGERS. CARP, IF YOU USE 36ML OF NICOTINE , THEN YES, IT IS GOING TO BE AROUND, BUT IT'S LIKE THROWING NAPALM ON A GREASE FIRE. YOUR ARTICLE JUST ISN'T GETTING IT. VAPING IS THE FUTURE FOR OTHERS TO QUIT, ENDOORSE IT, SO THE FDA CAN POLICE IT.

ONE MORE THING, PHILLIP MORRIS, & J R REYNOLDS ARE JUST 2 OF THE MANUFACTURERS OF LIQUID NICOTINE, WHICH WHEN HANDLE BY UNPROFESSIONAL PEOPLE, (WHJO BY THE WAY, CAN GET IT OFF OF THE INJTERNET WITHOUT A LICENCE), HAS ALREADY KILLED A NUMBER OF CHILDREN. LOOK , ONCE dOCTORS MAKE IT A PRIORITY TO  HELP TO CLASSIFY VAPING AS A CVESSATION DEVICE , THEN, AND ONLY THEN , CAN THE FDA COME IN AND LIMIT WHO  GETS THE LIQUID NICOTINE.

I AGREE WITH YOU, I AM PROUD OF NOT SMOKING FOR EIGHT MONTHS, MY DAUGHTER PUTS ME DOWN FOR VAPING, WHILE SHE PUFFS ON CIGARETTES, HOW COULD VAPING BE WORST THAN SMOKING, I USE TO SMOKE A CIGARETTE EVERY 5 MINUTES, I HAD TO USE AN INHALER JUST TO SMOKE,OF COURSE THE CIGARETTE COMPANIES ARE GOING TO PUT BAD THINGS OUT THERE ABOUT VAPING, IT'S TAKING MONEY OUT OF THEIR POCKETS, AND THEY SURELY DON'T CARE IF YOU LIVE OR DIE.

I'm using the e-cigarette and I don't feel bad as I did with smoking a cigarette. I smoked very little at the end of my smoking up tp Oct.29 quit. I ordered the cigarettes and they were(?) lights. They were bad so made it easier to smoke vey little.  I had my coffee without  smoking and smoked almost none 1-2 a day for some time. It was a mental thing with saying I QUIt. I used Chantix a couple of weeks as my Ins. was suggesting I talk to Dr.. She required I pay and join the ALA which I did and prescribed the Chantix. I had no problem with it but would not use it again. I have 2 weeks of it left here. I think I'm just thinking with this egiarette at almost 76 It beats picking up a cigarette again. I doubt I will.

I have been using the "e-cigarette" and have been weaning myself off of it. I dont want to keep up the habit of inhaling smoke - even though its not really smoke. I also find that it hampers my breathing. Giving up smoking has forced me to learn to breathe all over again. I feel good!!!

Not all vaping contains nicotine. Some are just different flavors. You all need to chill.

jeff.b.greenlee

I have found that the e-cig was helpful the last time that I quit.  I used it occasionally after a heavy meal.  Over time I just did not need it anymore.  Even with nicotine, e-cigs are way less addictive than real cigarettes.  Real cigarettes must have other chemicals that potentiate the addictive quality of nicotine.

I have quit once again by using Chantix, and as long as I can stay away from real cigs, I will be okay.  The e-cig helps me do that.

Vaping seems to be working for me. I no longer smoke cigarettes  at work, I only Vape.  I notice when I do smoke a cigatette I feel like crap it is so much different.  I can walk up stairs at work after vaping try that with a cigarette good luck! I am using 6mg nicotine eliquid which is the lowest and it beats my craving. I will start mixing 6mg with zero once I am ready.  This is the first time I can say I am optimistic on becoming an EX.  I think the article is misleading when I feel it is a much better quitting tool than the ones that are FDA approved.  I notice I feel all the benefits you get when you quit smoking while vaping. I feel better and can breathe. My energy, heart rate, sense of smell, taste improved 100%. My skin looks awsome not so dry.   It has to be a healthier alternative to tobacco.

The 'liquid' that is used in an e-cig is glycerine.  Glycerine was used in the air-conditioning units of children's hospitals in the 50's to 70's to kill pathogens, viruses and bacteria in the air.  It is also used as a gentle way to get rid of thrush in babie's mouths and in thicker form as an industrial lubricant.  And in thinner form as an ingredient in sexual lubricants.

So the 'carrier' isn't dangerous to human health - it's true value as an air purifying agent has been forgotten, and there is a small amount of evidence to suggest that vaping actually helps the lungs to rid themselves of years of black tar caused by heavy smoking of cigarettes.

Vape on, midears- it will do you a lot less harm than hot smoke full of zillions of toxins. I'm about to go on my 3rd and final quit on Sunday, and my ecig is out again and ready for me!  Strength to all!

nickena34

I have been using my ecig for about 4 days and so far have not even touched a cigarette, it's a lot less harmful to me than the cigarettes.  I find it as a helpful tool to quit and then go off it.

e-cigs contain the same chemical as anti-freeze brakefluid and oil dispersents it is used to create the vapor that cones out the burner which is made from copper and lead and your inhaling this can cause lung crystalization and charging the device to long letting it get hot will cause it to explode (in ur mouth) and catch something on fire (shooting fireworks)

There are more then one kind of glycerine. The one in Vape liquid is vegtable based (VG)  it is a general cooking product typical used in deserts

Someone above mentioned we need to have e-cigs throroughly investigated and then this raging debate can stop.  There are so many misconceptions about the e-cigarettes and that needs to be reviewed.  Sure, to quit all inhaling of anything would be ideal.  In that case, these days, don't go outside, because even if one doesn't smoke, the pollutants in the air alone would shock everyone.  I believe if serious research would be conducted, it will be found that the e-cigarettes are in no way, shape or form comparable to the anaolog cigarettes.  I've been reading of many who have now moved on from analogs with the help of vaping.  I think everyone needs to do what they feel is right for them, and I hope that studies will be conducted to validate or invalidate vaping.  I also believe that Big Tabacco is using a lot of fear tactics because this new market is definitely cutting into their poisonous profits.

I quit smoking almost a year ago thanks in part to 'becomeanex' and I tried vaping before i just quit cold turkey.  Contrary to many peoples experience here I actually got worse with ecigs.  i smoked more because I didn't feel like I was getting enough nicotine... At all.  In fact I could barely keep the darn things charged up and I had two of them(ecigs).

But to each their own.

I think that the article brings up some good points though.  Especially about 3rd hand smoke, which i had never heard about before.

Sufficed to say that there is a real danger to people who vape and  those who don't, absorbing the chemicals through their skin.

Now, I'm not on board with the whole Vape fearmongering but I wouldn't dismiss outright an article that brings viable points to the discussion table.

Vaping works for some people as a cessation device, that's good.  But what is also good is researching the new problems that might arise with the implementation of technology(like ecigs) niches like this one.  The whole point of this place is quitting smoking and really any way we partake of that deadly drug nicotine.  It's about living healthier and more responsibly in the end.  Changing a destructive mindset and learning how to really think critically about the hard questions that come up.

At least it is for me.  My 2 cents.

"This study says this..."

"This study says that..."

How about some actual links to some real educational studies? People who think e-cigs contain antifreeze are seriously misinformed. They don't. The liquid I use to vape with is made of propylene glycol, food flavoring, vegetable glycerin and nicotine. Look at a tube of toothpaste. At least two of those ingredients are found in toothpaste. Mouthwash too. Not to mention a TON of other things.

No child has ever died from nic poisoning. If they have, provide the links that prove it, and I'll retract that statement.

Most e-cigs and e-liquid is not made by BT. Yes, a few companies own a few brands, but most of the hardware and liquid is made by private corporations. BT and Big Pharma, for that matter, are behind every scare-tactic article you read. Their goal is to get people afraid because these devices are SAVING LIVES while they're also LOSING THEM MONEY. It's all about money for them. They don't want people to stop smoking with e-cigs. E-cigs actually WORK, which is going to be their undoing unless something is done about them. Maybe the FDA can regulate them right out of society. If they do, it's going to be a sad day for every smoker who's tried to quit a hundred times and failed, but probably could have succeeded with e-cigs.

My doctor said "no" to e-cigarettes as there isn't enough regulation to know they are safe.

I notice that people that use them defend them as seriously as a smoker defends the cigarette.  This makes me wonder if they are really curing the habit or only transforming it into another habit.

@ncolwell--please read the label on the toothpaste and mouthwash.  Consumers are advised to avoid ingesting these products.

Propylene glycol is not antifreeze, but is used in antifreeze that might leach and contaminate food sources.  The following link provides a summary about the chemical.

Searching for studies on the internet will lead you to the college and government studies.  I will leave you to search on your own as I noticed many people beleive what they want to and will find different meanings in each study report.

I agree with all of pro-vape comments. The people who are getting rich are the people making nicotine lozenges, gum, chantix, etc... Look at the side effects of chantix alone! I dont care if the government does a study, I wouldn't believe it anyway. I believe what I hear and see with my own ears & eyes! People are quitting smoking with vapes!

I'am using the ecigarette now and my quit date is for the 13th of Aug. 2014.  I find it something I pick up oaccasionLLy when it is charged. When you light a cigarette it is normal to smoke the whole thing. I'm down to 2-3 cigarettes and certainly feel better. I'm using the ecigarette so I don't smell and if I''m out and have a craving I take 1 puff.  If it is residue from these devices it has to be miniscule or would be on everything.  Yes it will be a politacal  football for some time.  I belong to ALA and they litterally push the other smoking cessation products. I sarted wo wonder what was in it for them.

What Vapers won't tell you

Smoking is a lifestyle that controls one's life. Smokers will ignore what people are saying to them, miss out on events and one time only accomplishments of their loved ones and cannot be in the moment when they NEED to smoke. They will avoid going places and decline invitations if there's any chance they cannot smoke.

ECigs represent accepting the same lifestyle and control as smoking but, with a battery.

All it is is a different delivery device. Wake up people. Reclaim the you you never knew and stop being a slave to nicotine!

buzzy-bee

I personally have tried different ecigs and there are great differences between them.  I believe that they can help some people quit just like some medications work for some and not others.

Is there any where out there to support testing of them?  THIS DEFINATELY NEEDS TO BE DONE.  Information needs to be discovered and analyzed to learn the truth as best as it can be determined so we can all make our own decision with confidence.

Please don't knock down others for their efforts on quitting just because it's not for you.
