Let's Get Moving Challenge

Jump to solution

Today is a happy day darn it!   I've been smoke free for 38 days today.  I've been on my pity potty just moping around.  I get home from work and lay down and watch television all night.  I sleep the weekend away.   I have no interest in doing anything at all.  Sometimes I don't even want to leave the office because there's nothing to look forward to when I get home.  (I used to sit on my beautiful deck and have a wonderful glass of red wine with my smokes, before I start dinner).  Not anymore.  It's the depression I experience ever time I quit.   For those of you who don't know me, I've quit many times (one time for four years!)  It's like there is simply no more enjoyment in life.  I can't enjoy a glass of wine because it is my number one trigger -- alcohol.  I've learned that lesson  more than once.   I'm far from an alcoholic, but I do enjoy going out and having a few drinks on occasion (in addition to my glass or two of red when I get home).  I haven't had a drink since my quit date of May 1, 2017.   BLAH, BLAH, BLAH...

BUT NOT THIS TIME!!!!!  No, no, no.  This time I'm going to do something different.  I refuse to go down the same road.  What's that famous saying by Einstein?  "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?"  Well, insanity no more my friends.  I've decided to get off my couch and get my lazy butt moving.  This weekend I'm going to start living an active lifestyle.  I used to enjoy hiking, biking and kayaking and I do none of it anymore.  Everybody says that one of the best things for depression is getting outside and exercising.  Spring and sprung and there is no better time than now to start this challenge.

I'm looking for fellow Ex'ers to join me in my activity challenge.    I'm calling it the "Let's Get Moving" Challenge because I hate the word exercise.  Not only do I hate the word, I hate actually exercising.  LOL.  But really, all joking aside, I really do hate it.  But, I know it's the best thing for me.  I don't want to fail again.  I will fail if I don't try something different to get me out of this funk.

So, I challenge all of you to join me.  I'm going to try to "get moving" at least 4 times a week.  I'll stay accountable to all of you, which in turn will make me accountable to myself.  I promise to post my accomplishments and I welcome you to do the same.  Now that it should be easier for us to breathe, whadda-ya-say?  Do you want to take this journey with me?  Any activity counts, as long as you get off your butt and get your heart pumping.  Who knows, maybe we'll lose a little weight or a couple of inches in the meantime.

Great idea Jackie!  One of the first ornaments I put out at Christmas is a large basket of scented pine cones.

Good Morning MOVERS.  For the last week or so I have been making an attempt to compile some of the references of workout and other information that has been offered here.  It has been a wealth of information that I thought would be good to have in a particular reference point.  I have not completed it because of all of the comments to go through.  So I am suggesting that if you have time and have a reference if would post it in this reference file. https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/exercising-and-health/blog/2017/10/20/moving-references    I will try to keep an eye out and update it as much as I can.  It is still in the rough.

Another pacy morning!   First the reverse crunches - the twist - off to the gym - off to the service station to pick up my husband's car.  We are finally a two car family again.  YEAH!  I work with has fit for arm workout - breathing exercises and some plank work.  That's enough.   Have an enjoyable day everyone and do keep moving at whatever you choose to do.   Today I start the Whole 30 diet along with my daughters.  I am heading downstairs to work on some new recipes.

I am working tomorrow so I will use the bike today but nothing else.  I dislocated my shoulder last night, no I wasn't trying to lift anything, I turned to close a door and apparently it was the WRONG angle because the searing pain brought me to my knees and my arm was several inches longer than the OTHER arm.  It has happened countless times in the past but it has been a while and I was hoping it would not happen again.  I immediately iced it and put my arm on a high chair...one that is counter level, I lifted it onto the chair with the other arm and then I lowered my body to the floor slowly and felt the "pop" of the bones realigning.  I don't have a ball and socket anymore so it is just like balancing two rough edged sticks together but it worked.  I strapped my arm to my side overnight and kept an ice pack on.  I didn't get much sleep.  I want to start working with the bands as soon as it lets up enough so that it doesn't feel like I am being stabbed.  That's how I stopped it from happening before but it has to settle some.  I can still use the bike and just be cautious with my activities of daily living AND showering is HORRIBLE...I have a really hard time washing and rinsing my hair.  Hopefully, I can ice it before my shower tonight so that it will be a little less excruciating.  I will check back here either tomorrow or Sunday...likely Sunday. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.  Thanks kristen-9.7.15  for the ideas and great job JACKIE1-25-15‌ on organizing things!

Screaming, and running in terror at the visualization of getting your shoulder back together.  I really think you should only try the bands under the supervision of a PT.......really!

Really!

It hurts like crazy when it happens but it USED to happen at LEAST once a week until I built up some muscles.  I think that running into the wall, bruising the muscle, and then babying it was probably the WORST thing for me.  I took the bands out today and I only did a few repetitions with the weakest bands.  It was not bad and I actually think it decreased some of the spasms that I have been having since I dislocated.  I have to be careful but I can't stop working it.  Last time I went through this, I was told that I needed surgery IMMEDIATELY and that PT would just make it worse.  I went home and made an appointment at UVA for a second opinion 3 months later, in those 3 months, I worked with the bands every day, adding a little at a time and when I went for the second opinion, they said that I CANNOT make this bone deterioration any worse and that when they looked at my MRI and then at ME, they could not believe it was the same person.  That is from working it...slowly, yes, but working it nonetheless. I am following a very conservative course.  I DID do my 7.5 miles on the bike, I work tomorrow so I HAVE to be able to use my arm.

Love you...now that you are HOME, are you going to immediately get back to housework?  I am so glad you had that time at the beach.

@Ellen  -  I agree with YoungAtHeart‌ please check with your doctor or PT trainer before you use the bands.  You may be stretching more than the bands and causing you more pain.   You are a wonder!    I found it difficult to read the action you had to take to get your shoulder back in place.  I am praying for you and hope your situation is getting better.
