katdharris63's Status Update on 09/30/2018

Hello everyone. I'm 25 hours smoke free so far so good but right now I am having a very intense craving so I decided to come on here and ride out this craving. I'm doing this cold turkey. I've tried chantex in the pass and it worked but I started back smoking and this time I really want it to work and this time I am more determined and decided to go cold turkey. I really want to stay quit this time

You can do this.  Keep that quit going.  Remember N.O.P.E.   The craving will only last 5 minutes or so.  Distract yourself.  Bite a lemon.  Take a walk.

What you are going through is to be expected.  Please go browse some of the blogs on this site, and you will find similar testimonies.  You just have to tell yourself these will pass, and you will feel better with every day you remain smoke free.  Please try to learn as much as you can about the addiction, it will help your brain adjust to a new situation.  Here is something to help you set your expectations: https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/Giulia-blog/2018/03/01/quitting-is-a-skill-that-can-be-lear... and https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/jonescarp.aka.dale.Jan_2007-blog/2011/06/26/what-to-expect-...,  Keep your quit, it is precious.

Hi katdharris63  Looks like your quit date is set for today but you mentioned stopping 25 hrs ago so I assume you quit early.  If you did, update your quit date on http://www.becomeanex.org/my-quit-plan.php  and then  Logout (https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/logout.jspa) from the community and when you log back in it will be synced.  Congrats on your new journey.

Welcome to EX...please know that your best friends will be education about nicotine addiction, support from others who know what you are going through, and commitment.  The first two you can get from here, the commitment has to come from you.  YoungAtHeart  usually writes a beautiful welcome but she may not have seen this.  I recommend writing a blog since they really are more visible to members of the community.

Welcome to our community!

I heard my name??!!  Congratulations on your first Day Won!!!

It really is important, Kat (I assume) to education yourself on this addiction.  I cannot recommend highly enough that you do the reading I will recommend.  The nicotine should be out of your system shortly after the first three days, then it's a few weeks for your body to adjust to life without it and ( the most difficult part of the journey, I think) then relearning your life as an ex-smoker.  We associated smoking with EVERY aspect of our lives and used smoking to hide from our emotions.  You can do it, though - lots of us here will attest to that!

The most important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for it  or at your local library. Here's a link to a video here on the site which describes nicotine addiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpWMgPHn0Lo&feature=youtu.be.

You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmoking.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!
