Barbaub's Status Update on 02/27/2021

I'm relieved I can focus my energy on this site and not smoking.  I know that is what is going to help me quit.  My quit day is now 2 days away.  I'm not feeling as nervous or anxious as I was.  I do wish the site were easier to figure out on my phone.  I can't carry my laptop around but I always have my phone.  I love that someone cared enough to put this website together AND made it free.  Thank you.  So today I'm going to try something that was recommended by YoungatHeart, I'm going to try to delay having a cigarette for as long as I can.  Do you think this is counterproductive?  Should I wait until my quit day?  Somehow I feel like I should capitalize that...Quit Day...at some point it feels like that will be an important day to remember.  Wow, so much in one post.  Happy Day everyone.

Hi Barbaub. Delaying works for some, but I believe that the technique is to delay some before having a cigarette. I think the idea of delaying as long as you can kind of sets you up to "break" and have a cigarette when you can no longer stand it. In my opinion, using the technique in that way is counter productive. As I understand it delaying is meant to be an encouraging thing, not discouraging or too hard.

I delayed having cigarettes in the last 10 or so days of my prequit. But I never did it to see how long I could go. I used the delay to test feeling OK with not smoking. If something triggered me, I used the delay in order to think about what was triggering me. But I pretty much knew when I would have a cigarette--2, 3, maybe sometimes 4 hours later.  During this time, I wasn't really withholding cigarettes so much as trying to get comfortable with not smoking.

You can get this, all pre-quit effort is worth it. You kind of can't really go wrong! Keep up the good work! 🙂

I did not use the delay technique but l really didn’t have the time, l got so sick that my quit was cold turkey, bold turkey. Just had to choose between smoking & breathing. I know it has worked for some but l have no experience with it. I think JonesCarpeDiem advocates for that method.
You SHOULD capitalize Quit Day, it’s a very big deal!

don't count, don't deny, just say "I'm going to wait a little longer" every time you think of smoking.
