Give and get support around quitting

I have no idea how to do this.

I grew up around smokers. Started when I was 15 and am now 39. I don't know anyone who has successfully quit smoking. I've moved to a new city where I don't know anyone who smokes. I am a closet chainsmoker. I use nicotine gum to get me through work. I would have so much more freedom to do the things I want without cigarettes. I am being pressured to quit, but don't know how. Some of these people have never smoked and they say "Just QUIT!"

I take your title to mean you don't know how to LIVE without smoking. I think that's the actual fear most of us have felt before quitting. It's so much a part of our lives, who we are, what we do, how we reward ourselves. Learning how to live nicotine-free is what we talk about most, in my opinion.

Welcome, and I'm glad you're here.

Yep, what AnnetteMM‌ said.  As the old saying goes, "Quitting is easy.  I've done it a hundred times".  It's the staying quit that is so difficult for most of us.  Stick close.  We'll show you how.  Welcome to EX!

kstew2772‌ A lot of great advice already offered here. In order for quitting to happen you must be present. Login, get involved, respond and commit to doing so without a cigarette in hand.  If you're committed to participating on the regular, then you're distracting yourself and establishing a new routine where smoking isn't a part of your life.

Hint: You can reply to an email and it will get posted to the site to acknowledge you're on the other end receiving these messages.

Welcome a'board!

"I don't know anyone who has successfully quit smoking."  Well, you do now:  /blogs/Giulia-blog/2017/06/18/elders-list-ao-december-7-2016?sr=search&searchId=72ee43f4-758b-43af-a...‌  And you can do this too.  /blogs/Giulia-blog/2018/03/01/quitting-is-a-skill-that-can-be-learned?sr=search&searchId=6b000f8b-a5...‌  People who have never smoked have NO IDEA how difficult it can be to stop.  They think it's simply a "bad habit."  It's really an addiction.  Once you begin to understand that, you begin to understand how to overcome it.  Glad you've joined us.  Read.  Learn.  Practice.  DO!  Cheers!

Well, welcome. We are all like you on this site, a bunch of smokers. Most of whom do not smoke anymore.  Your mind wants you to quit smoking, that is a real good start. wanting to quit. in fact, you will get no where without it. You should talk to your Dr. about quitting. Ask if there are any helps avaliable for you.  and try every single one that you can find. Some people can quit cold turkey , I wasnt one of them. i tried every help available.  and there are lots of them. You should get Allan Carr's book 'The easy way to quit smoking', and read it and read it.  you have to learn to hate cigarettes.  they are, after all, killing you and you are paying to have them kill you.  It is not easy, not at all. But you can do it.  and you MUST do it to save your own life.  then think of your new, non-smoking life.  Clean and fresh. healthy and pure.  You can do it. I found this meditation very helpful. Hypnosis to quit smoking mindfully - YouTube  you need some time and you need to get comfy while laying down. During this time of early quit I want you to be real nice to yourself, baby yourself, spoil yourself, you will be going through a period of detox and then a period of healing.  The detox is hard. This is not a baby face drug, nicotine.  It is a hard line drug, and you have made a wonderful choice to quit.  Remember each day, each and every day is one day nearer to chucking that nico-demon under the bus.  It WILL save your life by quitting. It is not easy, but it is doable. And, as my friends here say 'take what helps and leave the rest'.  Welcome to EX-Community.  Keep in touch.   karen

Make a plan (after reading and learning all you can about nicotine addiction and quitting). Set a quit time. Get support (that can include local--there may be a hospital quit program near you and other kinds of support). Ex is here 365 to listen, to help--blog as often as you wish.  Please start by learning all about nicotine dependency.

Yes you can, one day at a time. Welcome to Ex.

Please do the reading suggested by YoungAtHeart‌ and pay attention to all of the advice that has been given, it was all given to help you, we all started at the same place.  Some us smoked much longer than you have and some of us waited until a great deal of damage had been done before we paid attention.  You need to believe that you CAN do this and you also need to know that NOW you know LOTS of people who quit smoking successfully...LOTS of us.

We all want you to succeed, stay close to the site, read blogs...become a part of this community, it is the best way to quit and to STAY quit.

Welcome to EX,

Ellen
