Give and get support around quitting

Day one!!!

I’ve tried quitting on my own too many times to count, now I’m seeking help!!! It’s been 10 hours since my last cigarette. Over the last few days while cutting down to one or two a day my lungs started hurting and the way to make them stop was to have a cigarette. Today they still hurt and my anxiety over that is getting really bad!!! I’ve smoked for some 30 years and I absolutely hate it but it is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to quit!!! I want to feel better!!! Before this week I was wheezing when I went to bed and that completely made me say NOW IS THE TIME!!! I need support though and I don’t really know how to ask for it!!!

Did you know that Big Tobacco adds all KINDS of chemicals to cigarettes (like cough suppressants) to disguise our body's response to their effects?  You might be getting relief when you smoke because of some evil cr@p in there! 

The most important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for it online or at your local library.

 You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmokingonline.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance.

After you have completed the recommended reading, it will be time to make an informed choice of the quit aid, if any, you will use. If you go that route, I personally recommend the aids that don't let the addict control the dose such as the available prescription drugs or the patch. If used properly, gum, lozenges and inhalers are fine, but they need to be used only as a last resort.  I have seen folks become addicted to them if they substitute them for every cigarette they used to smoke - just trading one addiction for another.  I do not recommend the e-cigarette for three reasons: 1) the vapor has been compared to the polluted air in Bejing on a bad day, 2) they just provide another nicotine delivery system while continuing the hand to mouth smoking motion, and 3) the batteries can spontaneously catch on fire. . But – any method that you think will work well for you will be best for you.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

elizabethrocks ... Hi, I'm a Newbie Quitter too!  11 DOF  today...I highly recommend Allen Carr's easy way to quit smoking. AWESOME Book!  Fun to read too! I gained a new mindset from him. That has been huge in my making it...one day at a time!  The support and encouragement here is phenomenal!   Keep reading and you will gain the wisdom to keep moving forward

Remember you're not alone here. Many people here have smoked for 30, 40, some even 50+ years. You're right if you're ready NOW IS THE TIME  You can quit. Knowledge is the key. You can learn how to quit. Reading about nicotine addiction and quitting will give you confidence. Quitting at first may seem like the hardest thing you can ever do but the keywords are CAN DO. You can do it. Read everything suggested and take it one day or part of a day at a time. and believe in yourself and you will make it happen.

Welcome. See u asked for help and here we are. Follow all the links given to you. Take the daily pledge. One day at a time. We have all gone through exactly what you are right now. We Made it and so can you nice been smoking over 40 yrs. I quit with NRT but mostly the support I still get here. I went to feed the bird and give them water   It is 100 today I was wheezing all the way to my door. I thought wow this is bad. I might need to take a treatment. Imagine if I hadn’t quit. 164 days. I did it you will too. I promise you it does get better. Remember we have to fight for everything worthwhile. This is your life. Fight for your quit. We are all here for you

You totally have this! I am 11 days in. At my most difficult times, including standing in front of a cashier at 1am debating whether or not to buy cigs, I pictured being able to breathe again and not coughing anymore. Keep your reasons for quitting close to you....they will save you! *side note...I talked to the cashier for awhile (small town) and I knew that she smoked. I asked her if quitting wasn’t hard, would she still smoke? She said ‘No’ without hesitation. 

Keep going!
