Vacation - Advice Needed

I know we need to go through many things for the first time smoke free. This is my first vacation coming up. I know I can do this. Not sure how hard it will be. I’m sure it’s more the memory / habit craves that will attack me. I know so many of you have had the first vacation , while you were working on DOF and NML. I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Maybe , I just need to hear you tell me that it’s normal to feel a little apprehensive. I don’t like to fly , so it will be new to not smoke . But I do know that smoking didn’t stop me from being scared, at take off and landing. So how about it?  Let’s hear your stories of first vacations. I’m sure others are going to find this helpful. Those of you who have gotten to know me, know that I try to be positive. I’m looking forward to vacation , just a bit apprehensive about it

As always, I don’t know how I would be this far into my quit , w/o all of you wisdom, love, prayers and support. So it’s a great time for me to say thank you , from the bottom of my heart. May all your days be happy, healthy, smokefree days.

I am also flying. It scares the heck out of me too. I always bring my day planner and mess around with that. I also bring magazines and lots of gum

I'll tell you from experience that our anticipation of the event far outweighs what will happen.  Stock up on your distractions (toolbox), pack your puzzles, gum.  When you find yourself twirling, take a few seconds for yourself somewhere and take those 5 minutes and breathe in and breathe out, make yourself relax.  I kept chanting in my head, this will pass, this will pass, let it go, let it go.  You'll be just fine.  You know what to do.  Take it one day at a time !!!

Barb - I went on vacation while in NML.  I found my old posts as well!  https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/people/rollercoaster831/blog/2017/08/13/packing-and-grateful and https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/people/rollercoaster831/blog/2017/08/28/back-from-vacation-and-68... I won't tell you it was easy.  I will tell you it can be done.  Think about all of the great things....not having to time when you will have a sickarette because you can't smoke in the airport or rental cars or hotel rooms!  Those are GREAT things now!!!

I think, deep down, we know whether we are going to Cave or not before we go. I actually cancelled a trip to Florida which was only two and a half months after I quit. Because I was not sure that I wouldn't give in. Know it in your heart. Before you go.

Lots of walks on the beach, let the air heal you.  Pick up shells, ride waves, listen to the seagulls, smell the salt air...enjoy it, the beach is a wonderful place to vacation and I KNOW you CAN and WILL enjoy every moment.  You are in a good place.

Love,

Ellen
