My journey to being vape free!

Hello there this is my first post! My name is Courtney, I am in my early thirties and I am ready to break free from nicotine addiction! I have been puff free for 5 days now and it hasn’t gotten much easier yet. (days 2-3 were the worst though!) I started smoking cigarettes when I was in college and smoked for about 7 years. I got my first vape pen 8 years ago that was shaped like a cigarette and came with cartridges. After a while I needed more of a hit so I started going to refillable vape pens and then to larger ecigs with tanks and large batteries. After so many years of smoking ecigs I had this phlegm that coated my throat and had me constantly clearing my throat. I knew I needed to give them up soon. Then I saw a few news articles about people getting irreversible lung disease from smoking ecigs and that sealed the nail in the coffin for me (hopefully figuratively). I was so addicted to my ecig it was crazy. I would not go anywhere even when at home without it in my hand or in my pocket. I smoked it all day at work at my desk, then all night at home in the front of the tv. I was never as addicted to cigarettes as I was to vaping and now I was spending $150/month on juice and coils. I would hit it every 5-10 minutes all day long! Back when I smoked I usually only smoked around 3-5 cigarettes a day. I started off with 18mg nicotine and have been using 3mg for the last year and even went down to 1.5mg the past few months. My husband and I gave up drinking 2 years ago in July and that was a cakewalk compared to giving up vaping since the device had basically become an appendage.

I was so sick of having something controlling my life and costing me so much money! And to be honest, I was scared of all the recent reports of respiratory issues of vaping and I noticed that my teeth were getting sensitive which could be related to vaping. I quit on 9-9-19 and I have noticed that my anxiety and panic attacks have almost been nonexistent so part of me thinks the constant flow of nicotine is what caused it in the first place. The first 2 days my body felt great it was just tough coping with giving up the physical addiction of having my ecig wherever I went (similar to a cell phone). On day 3 and 4 I have noticed that my throat is very sore, my nose is congested and I am having difficulty breathing. I think it might be my body trying to clean itself of this film that has coated my lungs and throat. Question: Has anyone else who has been vaping for a long time experienced this? I'm really hoping it will get better with time! The following helped me quit: nicotine gum, cinnamon gum, mints, exercising everyday, drinking lots of water/tea/seltzer water, constantly staying busy, having little yells/grunts to get you through a bad crave, and taking a lot of deep breaths while chanting little mantras like “This too shall pass.” Best of luck to the other former vapers! I hope you can break the chains that are holding you captive.

-Courtney

Welcome, and thanks so much for sharing your story! Have you read through any of the blogs on the site? https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/people/AnnetteMM/blog/2019/09/08/how-to-quit-juul-or-vaping-in-ge... for instance? I love that you've already started and you're really paying attention to how you feel. You are certainly on your way to freedom

As for the throat and nose congestion, yes it is a symptom of healing. We tend to feel worse before we feel better.  Soon, though, you'll take a deep breath through your nose and smell all the wonderful smells!

Hello Annette thank you for the words of encouragement! Yes I have been reading other posts on here about vaping for several days now. I try to spend a lot of time on here whenever I have a craving, instead of smoking I just read people‘s posts on here and it’s been helping me.

Great first post!  You and https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/people/TLSQUIT4LIFE/blog/2019/09/14/finally-found-the-motivation  TLS quit vaping almost at the same time.  Maybe you two can become quit buddies.  Just a thought.

Ah yes, the constant clearing of the throat.  I remember it well (from cigs, for me, never vaped).  The symptoms you describe are fairly typical.  Should pass in another couple of days.  All those little cilia that move the crud along get paralyzed and when we quit they start to come back to life.  If it persists, you might want to visit your doc.  Here's a blog about withdrawal symptoms:  https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex/blog/2018/01/04/early-withdrawal-symptoms   You can also type "withdrawal symptoms" in the search box and it will populate with lots of blogs on the topic.

Wish I had quit in my 30s.  You're in the prime of your life, great time to take charge of it!

Love the "little yells/grunts to get you through a bad crave."  I used to shout "OH JUST GO AWAY!"  It helped!  Five days is FABULOUS!  You hang tough.  You're doing GREAT!

Congratulations on your decision to quit vaping and your first five days!  The news about it is disturbing, to say the least.

Changing up your routines might prove helpful   Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from where you vaped. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first puff with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to vape so the view is different. go outside instead of staying inside,  Take a different route when you are out and about so you aren't driving by your vaping supply shop and to give you new scenery to enjoy. Take a quick walk at break time instead of vaping.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that vaping thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of vape if you need some fresh ideas:

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want to vape" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!

Wonderful post and way to document it! I don't know about the coating of the throat or mouth, I was a smoker. I do know that amazing changes happen, so this will probably improve for you.

I has a "wart" on my right ring finger, on the last knuckle just above the nail. It would itch, I would scratch it open and pick at it, it shouldn't itch for a while, rinse and repeat. It wasn't noticeable except to me, or when I pointed it out to others. Since quitting, don't know exactly when, the thing disappeared, I just happened top notice one day that it didn't itch anymore. This thing was there for a couple years. It never got bigger, so I didn't pay it any attention. My point, with the increased circulation, and without the constant damage being done, your body will heal itself! Congrats on your success so far!
