A new batch just came out of the oven Jennifer_Quit_05-01-14. Here's some to go with your coffee.
Do you need a ladder to stir that coffee?
susan_m ... you look so pretty in pink!
More cake ...
glad you could make it. I was thinking of cranking up the hot tub later. Rest our weary bones and all that.
We do have a hot tub around this joint, right?
Question from a clueless baker (while I drink my first cup of the day, it's only 7am at my house), why do we call it "something (apple, strawberries whatever fruit) - coffee cake??? Is it just because you have it with coffee??? Because while I bought many times, I never tasted any coffee in it.
Daniela Daniela-3-11-2016, you've got to stop . . . I'm busting something over here. You, clueless about baking? that's like saying the sun knows nothing about lighting up the sky.
And if you don't hand me a piece of that chocolate raspberry parfait right now, I think I'm going to pass out.
Thank you, I do bake...love it, and actually make my own version of the "Parfait" cake...
But Pati, c2q, you did not answer my question, honestly why do we call it "coffee" cake if it does not taste like coffee?
Daniela,
Yes they call it coffee cake because it is most commonly ate along with a cup of coffee, and in the morning time usually. Our language can be quite confusing at times. Like, an ice cream Sundae....well, if I eat one today...should I go order an ice cream Friday?
Pops8 I hope that puts a little clarity on it...not that it actually makes sense either.
Did someone say sundae, Pops? Repeat after me . . .virtual calories do not count, virtual calories do not count ...
Pops, thanks, now you confused me even more :-) I am in "discovery" mode all the time, and as I was telling you already, many of your guy's jokes are lost on me. And if I don't get it once, twice, and have no time to ask, maybe the 3rd time I get it, just based on context. When you learn a new language, it is so funny when you try to literally translate expressions...they just "look" so funny in your native language if you try to paint a picture on you brain of the expression...
For the reason you said, because it is meant to be eaten with coffee. At least, that's true here in the Americas, in most of Europe and in the UK, where it may also be called tea cake. Coffeecakes are usually leavened with baking soda or baking powder, for a more bread-like texture. My German in-laws always, always, dunked the coffee cake into their coffee, like we would a cookie. There is also a true coffee cake, that is sponge cake, flavored with coffee.
Thanks Pati c2q for the cultural baking lesson!
I know the "real" coffee cake because I make it sometimes. One of my specialties is the sponge cake. It has not fat in it, we use all kind of syrups to moisten it, make as many layers as we feel like, bake it in all kind of formats, and of course fill it and frost it with a variety of flavors. Here is one I made for mom's birthday, 2 years ago, and despite the decorations, it was filled with coffee buttercream.
That's lovely. I was wondering why I was "schooling" the baker . . . I also wonder how many of us here in the States know the melt in your mouth goodness of the perfect sponge cake? Someday I hope I can try yours in RL.
You are more than welcome to come visit Pati, even if I don't bake regularly like I used to, I always do when we have guests; my son's in-laws are coming to visit in 2 weeks, mom and I already planned what sweets we are going to serve. In the Romanian tradition, much like Italian's (remember Marie from Everybody loves Raymond, as soon as one entered her home she was asking "are you hungry?"), you have to feed your guest. If they come at meal time, they have to eat with you, if they stop by in between there would be coffee and cake, or cake and soft drinks, or just cake :-)
Daniela2016, have you got a special treat in your bakery case there for Strudel as elvan requests? I'll bet you can create something wonderful with a whisk of your hand.
Daniela2016 That cake looks SCRUMPTIOUS and the description makes it SOUND absolutely amazing. WOW, WOW, WOW!
By the way, Daniela Daniela2016, did you ever get any more responses about your idea on using the cafe differently? Maybe this would be a good place to talk about it.
If we "actually" ate this stuff as fast as we find it and paste it on here....there's not one of us that would be able to walk anymore. Everyone of us would be sooooo overweight, and most likely all dying of massive diabetes....but the cyber diet is so much vicarious fun isn't it?
Now where's my coffee????????????
Sketchy stuff. Is that what they call it these days?
You just get one cup of this dark stuff, Pops. And never before bed time.
It looks like the lunch crowd is through. Since Pops is off today, I guess I'll have to clean up the mess in back . . . just kidding, Pops. Happy to do it. They are all yours on Sunday.
I'll be thinking of afternoon treats, though for out on the Sundeck around the hot tub. Something cool, thermally speaking.
c2q and Daniela2016 Can you put together a really nice birthday cake for Strudel? Just heard today is her birthday.
Okay, elvan. I hope you brought the birthday candles. I am not the baker that Daniela2016 is, but I do have friends. Happy Birthday, Strudel! To one of my very favorite Ex's.
These are beautiful! I don't think Kathy comes on until evening but perhaps the Strudel mentions will get her to her party! Thanks, ladies.
Ahh, finally, time to relax. I'm ready for a little R&R with my quit buddies. Come sit over here and chill if you've got the time.
Thanks for opening the hot tub area, susan_m.
All that's required is a little internal sunshine, and I've got a glass of that right here with your name on it.
Some with spirits and some without, all with raspberry and lime. Fresh towels in the corner. Come on in!
Enjoy!
Thanks everybody for stopping by the cafe today. I had a great time, and learned a few things too. The Cafe will be open again on Sunday in Celebrations & Events when Pops will be serving up his special blend of popsitude. See you there.
Would you look at that face. It must be Friday already.
