Low dose CT screening

I keep seeing this test mentioned.  I assume it detects cancer and/or chances of?  Can I simply ask my dr to order it for me  due to being a former smoker?   forgive me as I'm sure its been posted before.

I am glad you found the answer to your question Bonnie. I had the low dose CT scan in February. (I smoked for 40 years and I quit 9 years ago. I didn’t have any symptoms - but I had heard it was a good idea to have this screening test.) I consider that it saved my life! It detected early (Stage 1) lung cancer. They did surgery to remove the lobe of my lung where the cancer was located. It had not spread. I am so very lucky that this cancer was found so early! So, although scary, I think it was a good idea for me. I would definitely recommend taking to your doctor about it. Take care?
