Give and get support around quitting

Not quite there yet

My quit date was to be May 1st-my 68th birthday. It didn't work out because I didn't prepare. I can't even find my plan on this site. I spent the morning in my cardiologist's office going through many tests and on May 14th I will have surgery on my femoral arteries, which are clogged.  I have been so freaked by what has been happening to my legs, it sort of took over everything. About a year ago I went through hypnosis for quitting smoking and I have a copy of the cd somewhere in this house that I need to find to listen to every day. I need to choose a new quit date and find my plan of attack.  Since I will be in the hospital overnight on the 14th and will not be able to smoke I think that would be a good time to start "the quit".  I do have patches ready for the journey. now when I press the pot button it says I am not allowed to post. geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.

Click on "My Quit Plan" in the upper right corner of screen or this link https://www.becomeanex.org/my-quit-plan/.  Hopefully that is what you are referring to.  Best wishes to you on your surgery and quitting smoking.  There really is no bad day to quit!

I know special days (like birthdays, holidays, etc) work for some folks stopping whatever (smoking, eating, etc).  That never worked for.  It was a special day and I'm celebrating!  Which of course included smoking, which of course wasn't real smart.  Did the docs tell you have to quit prior to the surgery?  They often do now.   I've tried about everything at this point, including hypnosis.  This time Welbutrin, nicotrol inhalers, smoking cessation and the Ex.  Something clicked for the first time ever.  I have a year smoke free this past March.   I know this site made a world of difference.  I read everything I could, prepared and educated myself.  The support here is priceless.   If you don't have new quit date picked yet, it really helps to have one.  That's a part of your plan!   Sorry to hear about your surgery and hope all goes well.  That would freak me out also.  You do know smoking isn't going to help with your recovery?

Best wishes

Thanks soo much. I do have to quit. The surgeon was so happy to hear that I joined this group and am planning to do it.

I was just slamming up to near panic attack at the thought of going through another chemically induced stress test. Last time in needed the antidote.  This time was easier on me. I WILL get my ducks in a row and get set up for the end of smoking.

Welcome to our community!

I quit before the same surgery - my surgeon informed me that he could make my arteries 50 again, but that if I continued to smoke, I would need the surgery again  and would probably not be healthy enough for him to perform it.  Left unsaid was the very real possibility of losing a leg.  Started on Chantix the next week and haven't looked back!  Funny how THAT gets our attention!!!!

I'm glad you have come for advice on educating yourself, planning, preparing and getting support for your quit.  We can help with it ALL - you just need to provide the commitment not to smoke another cigarette NO MATTER WHAT.

The important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for it online or at your local library. If you do nothing else to get ready for your quit, please do give this a read.

You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmoking.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance. Here is a video to inform you further about nicotine addiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpWMgPHn0Lo&feature=youtu.be.

It will be informative if you do the tracking and separation exercises recommended here on the site. As you track each cigarette smoked, note its importance, and what you might do instead. Put each one off just a little to prove that you don't NEED a cigarette just because you think you do.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:
 https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2013/02/25/100-things-to-do-instea...
The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!

Some see the light, some feel the heat. Sounds like you've received the YOU MUST QUIT OR ELSE verdict. It's as good as any reason to quit. Ex will be here to listen, to encourage--quitting is so doable. Yes you can--one day at a time.

I didn’t even have a plan when I chose my quit date other than I was done with smoking and no matter what I went thru I wasn’t going to light up.  Quit cold turkey. Didn’t have a clue what I personally would experience since it’s different for everyone.

I personally believe that that the only real tool you need is DETERMINATION. It’s all about your attitude and stubbornness. If you truly intend to quit then you will. I went thru all kinds of craziness at first.  My head felt like a kaleidoscope, my body ached and I couldn’t sleep. This site and googling everything I was going thru helped tremendously. I discovered what I was going thru was normal and survivable.

Here it is 4 1/2 months later and I rarely even have an “insert cigarette here” moment. I am proud to say after 37 years I am an ex smoker.

You are so able to do this. Don’t use I can’t find my “plan” excuses. Instead “lose” your cigarettes and forget where you used to go to buy them.

We are here for you!
