Give and get support around quitting

Preparing to quit while living with 2 heavy smokers. Is it realistic?

I am calling out to anyone who lives with a smoker and has quit or is trying to quit. I have set my quit date for a day in 2 weeks. I can avoid the people who smoke at work, I can visualize this, however, I cannot visualize getting away from the people I live with. I currently am roomating with two heavy smokers who smoke in the house. I am living here until something better comes along. The problem is the house reeks of cigerettes, there is always a cigerette rolling machine on the coffee table, and I have to walk thru their home to get to my room. I forsee when I quit and my sense of smell comes back, this smell is going to be a complete trigger. My plan is to somehow by scented contraptions that will keep me from smelling the smoke. I feel if I confront them, they will just tell me to find another place to live. At the moment, rent is not cheep, in the area I live in, so rooming with people is my only option. If anyone has any sugestions for me and my forseen dilema, I would appreciate it. BTW,,when I am not working or having to do school work, I am not at home but, out..Thanks for any advice.

I just quite myself a few days ago. My son and dil live with me. They are both smokers. Right now they are gone for the summer. I also have fear of when they return. We only smoke out doors so it should help. I will update when they return home.

Maybe if you made a deal with them to only smoke outside. That way you can choose when to be exposed to it.

I think it is much harder when others smoke around you and especially in the house.  My daughter I am making go outside and my husband works on the road so he is gone right now until the 26th of the month or so and he will have to go outside too.  I am needing some advice on using the patch what are you doing cold turkey or nicotine replacement products? The patch is making me vomit so I took it off, can I cut in in half?  I have to have something these cravings are killing me!

Yes, I quit smoking when my room-mate was continuing as a chain smoker.  It is just determination that is necessary, and the process will automatically follow.  You may begin by watching some motivational videos to help in your determination.  An example would be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXtKYFxy11c

One of my advice on you is to ignore those who smoking around you because i notice that is only your problem, quitting on smoking honestly is a really hard thing but just like i always advice to my friend ,self control and give a discipline for your self and do what is right for an healthy lifestyle but those stuff are really hard thing to do.In fact my friend in Sweden use to quit too but because he can't avoid smoking sometimes i suggest to him to bough an electronic cigarette at http://www.paulsaar.se/ in their country which effective way of smoking once 1 week.

Hi there!  Congrats on quitting smoking!  I too live with a smoker.

It's all about mentality.  Last time I 'tried' to quit, I failed b/c I was miserable each time I smelt the other person smoking...I envied the smoker.

This time, I feel happy to be smoke-free and I feel bad for the smoker.  I do not envy her.

We need to feel sorry for the people still caught in this trap...esp when you've found a way out.  Although you predict less-than-stellar reactions, you could ask them to smoke outside or smoke in one room in the house.  I know that doesn't completely eliminate the problem, but it is helpful.

Good luck!  We must learn to co-exist with smokers b/c you'll always see them or smell them here and there.  Today, I just feel bad for putting the non-smokers through this when I smoked!  Ironic, eh?!

And...I quit 6 weeks ago.  I feel good.  Smoking  now stinks to smell it. =))

I quit 2 months ago and my boyfriend smoked...I'm not gonna lie, it was difficult especially when we had arguments but I stayed strong. He didn't smoke inside though but the smell...it STINKS especially when your sense of smell increases. I think I scowled at every smoker I walked by or was around the first few weeks. All of my friends smoke too. Will-power!!!  We just moved and our new roommate is a ridiculous chain smoker...he sat right outside on the porch with the door open and I finally had to bring it up to him that, hey I recently quit smoking and you still smoke so if we can compromise on the the door being close, that'd be great. That's a respectful and understandable request. I would start looking for a different room to rent if I was you. I lived in SF so I understand the dilemma with finding a place to rent. Best of luck, you can do it. whether you quit in a house full of smokers or healthy Zen vegans, it'll all be worth it.
