And here I thought it was plastics that were the biggest threat.
Cigarette butts are the ocean's single largest source of trash - Business Insider
A complete tragedy!
I have walked along the ocean's edge and seen them coming in on the waves. They take 18 months to 10 years to decompose. I am embarrassed to admit I contributed to the problem by burying mine in the sand at the beach back in the old days. WHAT was i thinking????!!! Did I think they were going to sink to the other side of the world??
Feeling ever so guilty now about it!
I never thought of the ocean having a problem but now I know. I eat shrimp and fish and now I wonder if I am getting nicotine in my food.
Thanks for the info.
Makes me sick...seriously.
WOW! thats alot of butts!!!!
Cried reading this article...Thank you for sharing ...Colleen
My very first job was a maintenance and groundskeeper person at a large retail store. I got that job at 16 and continued all the way through college. I fell quite naturally into commercial real estate property management after that. So as someone who has spent way too many working hours picking up cigarette butts off the ground (often just a couple of feet away from a receptacle) I can honestly say I have never flicked a butt outside. When I would be at a traffic light, and see someone in the car ahead of me flick their butt, I would get out of my car, pick it up, take it to their window and say, "Excuse me, you accidentally dropped this". My wife finally made me stop when road rage killings started occurring more and more. I am still terribly ashamed at how many butts I contributed to landfills over 44 years .
TomW5.15.17 Your wife is very wise. I remember not long ago when a woman beeped at the person ahead of her at a light...you know, just a reminder to MOVE because the light was green? I had done that in the past. The driver of that car pulled into a parking lot after she did and opened fire and killed a 12 year old in the back seat. I don't do ANYTHING to intentionally annoy other drivers although I do drive pretty close to the speed limit and my brother says it is a miracle that I have not been rear ended. Hahaha.
So very sad.....our countryside is also littered with them. It takes years and years for a butt to disintegrate and the chemical it leaves behind on our precious earth and and water is a disgrace
Somebody should sue Big Tobacco for the cost of contamination and clean-up. Wish I was a lawyer!!
I moved into the single family home that I am in now with a couple, friends, that graciously took me in after I lost my job last Sept. She lost her right foot, and most of her sight to diabetes last year, so I thought, ok, I can help with a lot of household chores and transportation. I set about to clean this place up, which really needed it. The have a 15x25 foot cement slab (patio) out the back door. It, and the surrounding 5-10 foot of grass was littered with hundreds of white cigarette butts from the man of the house. I swept and raked the entire area. It looked marvelous, and I put my metal fire pitt just off the slab so that we can have fires out there on nice evenings, which we have had several. I thought he'd see that I cleaned up, and that he'd now toss his butts in the firepit. Guess what? Nope, it looks disgusting again, covered up with the butts again. Not gonna clean it up again either. This guy is so book-smart, he's common-sense stupid. IT Developer with a mid six-figure income, lol. Gotta laugh. I always tried to be litter aware - grew up watching that commercial of the indian chief standing on the side of the litter-covered freeway with the tears streaming down his cheeks - so when I smoked I would flick the remaining tobacco and paper off the non-biodegradable filter, (so that it wouldn't stink up my clothes), and put the filters in my pockets to throw them away when I got near a trash container.
I did the same with my butts, and I remember those PSA ads very well! It's funny (or sad) how I used to judge other smokers for littering. I would get mad because they were making responsible smokers like me look bad. You know, "responsible" as in giving my wife and kids second hand smoke, "responsible" as in making your health premiums higher in order to pay for my increased health costs, "responsible" as in filling the landfills with my poison.... SHEEESH! The things we can convince ourselves of .
Madyzsgocka Maybe you could get a couple of coffee cans and spray paint them white and then paint the word BUTTS in black and fill with sand and put on the patio...like at the corners. Do you think he would see that? Honestly, that would make me crazy...you are a good woman.
Even put bows on them and tell him they are presents???!!1
Elvan, yup it drives me nuts too. It's all I can do to ignore it, and hey, TomW5.15.17, I was in the McDonald's drive thru about 5-6 years ago, waiting to move ahead in line and lost in thought. I barely remember dropping my cig butt out the window onto the ground. The little girl who suddenly appeared in my open window with my lit tossed butt in her hand startled the crap out of me. She said "you accidently dropped this" and handed it to me. I then noticed her mom standing near the front driver side of the car supervising and smiling while another of her daughters was in between the back of my car and the front of the car in back of me searching the ground with her eyes. I took the butt, slowly shook my head at her, pulled up a bit and said to her mom, "ok, I'm wrong, and when one of these precious girls gets squished between cars just so that you can make your point is when you are going to learn that you are very wrong in what you are doing here as well. Shame on you, protect your babies, don't put them in danger" It just made me cringe to see these tweens wandering around in that busy drive thru. I mean for Ronald McDonald with a Big Mac up his nose sake, they do have employees that clean up after us. Not only our butts but our fast food wrappers, cups, and all other kinds of crap we carelessly leave behind in drive thrus and such on their properties. I could see if they did it while out in nature, at the park, at the beach, but in the drive thru?
Madyzsgocka That's terrifying!
