Congrats on your decision to quit smoking. It is the best once you get through the journey of quitting. As for nicotine gum. I think it is a good nicotine replacement. I think it is o.k. that you began it already. I personally got addicted to the gum. Only 3% to 5% get addicted. Stay close to this site. It is an immense part of a successful quit.
Many people use this site to quit smoking and different people use different methods. I did not have much success with patches and lozenges but, a couple of times, I made it a couple of mo. I'm doing better with chantix but it's not for everyone. Some people think cold/smart turkey is best but, I think, it's whatever works for you. I would suggest to use it as directed and for the length of time directed. After a mo., try going down to 2mg. dose.

I did not use anything but I have nothing against NRT's. I do tend to think it is more helpful to use patches if you can because you apply the patch and leave it there until you take it off...you don't keep applying patches because things are difficult. This is not easy but it most definitely is something you can do with or without nicotine replacement. Yes, there eventually comes a day when you have to stop putting the addictive substance into your body. I got so sick that I couldn't do anything but quit...it was either quit smoking or quit breathing. I chose to breathe and I have to choose it every day. Over four years since I quit, thanks to this site and the education and support and accountability...I have stayed quit.

My mom is on oxygen and smoking. I go to her house, get her groceries, make her bed, help her to dress. Quitting is no longer a choice for me. I have to. I want to live and breathe. Thanks for the notes on NRT. And congratulations to Y--O--U!
redpepper I am on oxygen at night only...I work out regularly, eat a healthy diet, spend a LOT of time on this site, and commit to my quit every day. You CAN do this and you are NOT alone!

Thanks zills, elvan. Went to Mom's earlier today. It's not easy, that's for sure. I have to go back in a bit, too. Stress craving hit hard as I was leaving. Nervous about going back. Whew! I can do this! Right?!?!
redpepper Of COURSE, you can do this...none of the rest of us have anything that you DON'T have. Believe that smoking doesn't help anything and say that over and over again because it really doesn't. What helps is right here...we will listen and hold your hand and do whatever we can to help you. We have all been where you are.

redpepper Hi...28 days ago I quit smoking. I used the lozenges. I began with 4mg. The directions said to use 1 every 1-2 hours. I didn't need that many. Every day I used less until I was using 1 in the morning upon waking, and 1 after each meal. I've cut the lozenges in Half making them 2mg. I wanted off the NRT...I didn't want to keep feeding the nicotine into my system. I haven't used them for over a week! So my body is now nicotine free They did help me tremendously getting through the first part of my quit journey. I now use Altoids to pop in my mouth when the urges hit. They help and keep my breath fresh. I have a friend who used the gum...little by little she would replace the nicotine gum with a piece of regular gum until she wasn't using the nicotine gum at all. I wish you the best. As everyone says...stay close to this site...read, read, read. If you haven't already gotten the book. I highly recommend Allen Carr's easy way to quit smoking.
Don't worry about setting a quit date for the gum. Keep learning about nicotine addiction and quitting smoking. Good job and keep adding up those smoke-free days. Just follow the directions that come with the gum and see how you feel from day to day. Your primary concern is N O.P.E. Not one puff ever.
Some use NRT and some don't. This time I'm used Welbutrin and nicotrol inhalers. You have to do what works for you and I agree with just following the instructions for the gum. I used the inhalers sparingly at first and rarely do now, but my doctor also said he didn't care if I used them the rest of my life. I sure beats smoking. Just stay positive about your quit, stay close to this site, and don't cause yourself added stress worrying about the gum.

WE ARE doing this!! How does it feel!? I always looked at people wearing oxygen, and wondered how they could still be smoking....but that's just how strong the addiction is! You have to make up your mind once and for all to just be done! Keep telling yourself that..... "I want to BREATH" "I want to LIVE" "I want to be FREE"
When you do that, you will most assuredly succeed! It really is One Day At a Time! and N.O.P.E.
I want to Best Buy to buy a new microwave and our sales guy was an ex smoker who admitted that he was still using the nicotine lozenges after 10 years of quitting smoking. That blew my mind away. Personally, I didn't use anything except the patch at first, then after I went off that I started using the lozenges and the gum. I went off that a few weeks ago and it's been almost 8 months. I figured it was time to wean myself off the actual drug. Nothing has changed much. But I smoked for 45 years. So I'm not expecting to feel better right away. I'm waiting for the one-year mark. Then I will make a formal evaluation of how I feel different. But I have had several medical professionals tell me that it is much preferable to actually smoking.
Some do, some don't. I usually don't respond to questions about Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) because I personally think it's better to quit nicotine altogether when you quit smoking. Putting a little nicotine in your body keeps the withdrawal happening. I think the sooner you stop the gum the sooner you'll be out of withdrawal and on your way.
