Give and get support around quitting

Just starting and need help

I am new to the group - so Hi!  I know I need to quit for my health and for my family.  I can't say I really want to quit... how do you get to the point of saying "OK I'm ready to quit!"  I'm looking for support to get to the very first step.

Good question. I can share some thoughts, but it's only my two cents worth. What you think about quitting is what counts so very much--most of all. Here is one truth, that isn't about opinion; the reason you do not want to quit is because you are addicted--the addiction makes smoking seem so enjoyable...until you really want to quit. When you want to quit, then it seems as if ones sole enjoyment in life is being stolen...and for what? To save a few bucks? Live healthier? Funny how just the thought of quitting can make saving a few bucks and one's health seem unimportant.

My two cents worth to you--come to terms with the fact that you are under the influence of nicotine. Accept that when you quit, you will, after a while, no longer need or want cigarettes--after the addiction fades. When you get to this place you feel good. That's your destination, not fear of quitting, not worry about what you are going to do when you want a cig...but getting to that place where you feel good about not smoking anymore.

Welcome to our community!

Once you do the reading I will recommend and truly understand this addiction, I think you will find yourself becoming excited to quit!  You will learn that all of the things we believed we got from smoking were all lies - and after they are unmasked, there really is no good reason to keep slowly killing ourselves by continuing to smoke.

The most important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for a free pdf of it on the net (copyright enforcement won't allow me to post the link here).   I strongly recommend you start your education with THIS

You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmokingonline.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance. You should also do the tracking and separation exercises suggested in My Quit Plan http://www.becomeanex.org/my-quit-plan.php

After you have completed the recommended reading, it will be time to make an informed choice of the quit aid, if any, you will use. If you go that route, I personally recommend the aids that don't let the addict control the dose such as the available prescription drugs or the patch. If used properly, gum, lozenges and inhalers are fine, but they need to be used only as a last resort.  I have seen folks become addicted to them if they substitute them for every cigarette they used to smoke - just trading one addiction for another.  I do not recommend the e-cigarette for three reasons: 1) the vapor has been compared to the polluted air in Bejing on a bad day, 2) they just provide another nicotine delivery system while continuing the hand to mouth smoking motion, and 3) the batteries can spontaneously catch on fire. . But – any method that you think will work well for you will be best for you.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand. If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:

https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2013/02/25/100-things-to-do-instea...

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!

Nancy

Welcome Id07 and you are the MOST important person to ME because but for the grace of God go I and CONGRATS on the question..the CHOICE is yours when do YOU Id07 get to THAT point.... I got to MY decision to stop using when it was said to ME.... when you get sick and tired of getting sick and tired of doing the SAME thing and expecting a different result.... I used nicotine for 38 years at the end of MY using nicotine 50 cigs a day and I tried weekend meetings with xsmokers telling their stories... I used nicotine patches and nicotine gum and using hard candy instead of using nicotine etc.... or plans of many varieties of MY QUITING THIS TIME IT WILL WORK... lol... I would switch brands of cigs... I smoked marlboro red so I smoke lites or menthol cigs or smoke non-filter or maybe roll my own ....NOTHING worked and every time FAILED so I had to make a decision for ME and only ME not for anyone else...... it was said to ME... poop or get off the pot... do YOU want to quit using NICOTINE or NOT ... the choice is YOURS.... everyone has FREE WILL to CHOOSE its YOUR life to live or die an early death from using NICOTINE...this was SUGGESTED TO ME YEARS AGO... those STAYING QUIT NO MATTER WHAT stated FACTS not feelings... feelings come and go and are fickle! They gave ME what was given to them FREELY....unconditional love...this means they did NOT say what I wanted to hear .... this wasn't a popularity contest this was life or an early death for ME.... they spoke the TRUTH to ME...it is called....TOUGH LOVE... they said to ME... NO ONE is going to care... its YOUR LIFE...YOU GOTTA CARE...so I finally made a decision for ME not ANYBODY ELSE to live MY OWN LIFE and say to ME.... to admit to MY inner most self.... I am powerless over nicotine and I am a NICOTINE ADDICT.... thats MY discovery and ONLY YOU Id07 know what your story is and NO ONE here or any where can tell YOUR STORY or answer WHEN YOU GET TO THAT POINT.... so please take what helps and leave the rest to be HELPFUL is MY only aim ...thank you and ALL these SUGGESTIONS were said to ME... keep blogging and educating YOURSELF ON YOUR NICOTINE STORY also please read the Expert Advice blogs here and go to the expert Dr Hays blogs for details of NEW goals plans ideas for he has tons of info to read and CHOOSE FOR YOU OWN SELF your plan...just for you! Then there is videos at whyquit.com with Joel on day one day two etc.... these SUGGESTIONS were made to ME in early recovery from using nicotine...please blog every day and keep asking because there is TONS of love and help from ALL here because WE remember what WE use to be like BEFORE recovery...thanks for saving ME and HELPING ME to remember.. but for the grace of God go I .... keep on keeping on

ld07, based on my thoughts I don't think we all get there at the same time.  When you are sick and tired of being sick and tired it requires change.  Quitting is not easy, but as so many people have told me it's doable.  My daily goal is to not smoke.  I do not think about tomorrow, next month, next year, etc.  I keep it in the present.  I smoked for over 30 years and my pseudo quits did not last long.  This time I was determined.  I read and thought about what I could do this time to make it different.  I started new hobbies, put some different music on may phone for when I walk, brushed my teeth whenever I felt an urge, kept myself (mind) occupied, allowed myself to feel (while doing whatever I had to in order to prevent me from acting), and so may more.  Everyone's tool kit is filled with different things.  However, the one thing you will not find in anyone' is a cigarette.  That will never rescue you.  This site helps a great deal and the Elders are always ready to help.  Hope to see you around the community.

Not much to add except YES it can be done, and my advice echoes everyone else- read, read, then read some more!

Arm yourself with knowledge, and you will also

find that reading helps to redirect you in the early days.

Knowledge is power, and it's nice to "meet" you

As someone who has tried desperately to quit, multiple times, you have to want to quit more than you want to smoke, or it won’t work. I’ve tried everything. I even wrote myself letters, but that didn’t work. I was

at a point where I despised myself for chain smoking until I had a headache, but couldn’t manage to quit. I had already learned about the nature of the addition, but for me, the key was to remove the brainwashing. Once you do that, that is where the want to quit is greater than the want to smoke. If you are at the point where you are vaguely entertaining the idea of quitting, but don’t want to yet, I’m with the others. Take this time to start learning about the addiction cycle of nicotine. Once you understand that, move on to the psychology. You will slowly chip away at your desire to smoke. Good luck.
