Youngatheart.7.4.12 Since you have such an endless knowledge of horticultural matters I thought I should ask you. Do you have any idea what this plant is? When I purchased it I was told it is a banana plant but I thought banana plants had wider leave on a stalk. Maybe it is some other variation but I can not find anything on it. Does anybody know?
A banana plant has yellow bunches of things hanging off of it......tee-hee!
It isn't growing like the banana plants I have seen. They have larger, even-edged fronds that kind of unfurl from the center stalk. I agree with Dian that it looks like a succulent of some variety.
Other than that, I got nuthin;!

I was told that I have to bring it in when the weather gets cold. Banana plants can weather the cold around here. but I seldom see any with bananas on them. tee tee hee back. Maybe gardenancy8 has a clue.
I have no idea either! But I will be searching for the name now. I just can't think of it right now. I know it's not a banana plant.

Close but I don't think that is it. I have bromeliad. It may be in that family I will check it out some more. Thanks for the direction.
Well, if it has fleshy leaves as opposed to thin ones it's either a type of bromeliad or succulent. I think it's in the family of the former. Take it to your nursery if you want to know?

Alright, this thing is in my yard, it is taller than I am, came up from something that sort of looked like a cabbage...it is very strange...

JACKIE1-25-15 It is flowering, little yellow flowers...looks like a corn cob coming out of the top. It is the strangest thing I have ever seen...I will save the seeds for you, jonescarp.aka.dale.Jan_2007! I am a little fearful of the giant though.
Ferget about the seeds, I want the magic beans. That corn cob on top just may be what giants use after #2. This used to be the norm until they invented cob pipes to get their nicotine.
It might be a weed, but it's cool.
Well, it sure is TALL...then again, everything in our yard is tall. I am sure the city will be sending a letter to my husband any day now and then he'll mow the lawn on the day they give as a deadline. It's a very interesting weed. Oh we have a bull thistle that he put stakes around so the town would know he WANTS it there. Dear God...

It really has a beautiful blossom but the plant is seriously prickly.

Okay, so I think it is a False Red banana tree! Like an ornamental plant.
First thought - cactus family - bromeliad. But yours isn't as spiny as in this photo. It's gonna drive me NUTS trying to figure it out though~
elvan Yours is gonna drive me nuts too. It looks like Dock (leaf picture below), but it doesn't quite match. It is definitely a weed, however. But then, buttercups and wild violets are weeds too. If we like them and they don't take over we call them pretty flowering plants and cultivate them. When they become invasives we call them weeds. Buttercups, Dock, Clover and Violets have roots that go down to Hell. You need dynamite to get them out. Bull Thistles, on the other hand are not only gorgeous, but easy to pull up.

I googled orange and yellow conical flower and it came right up.
jonescarp.aka.dale.Jan_2007, that is really pretty. My son's friend said he thinks my odd thing is a common mullein...I googled it and I think he is right...it also has herbal uses...as a tea:
Mullein tea is a traditional treatment for respiratory problems, such as chest colds, bronchitis and asthma. Mullein leaf tea is slightly bitter; a tea of the flowers is sweeter. Both the leaves and flowers contain mucilage, which is soothing to irritated membranes, and saponins, which make coughs more productive. Research has shown that the herb has strong anti-inflammatory activity, and lab studies suggest that mullein flower infusions have antiviral properties, as well.
Many of mullein’s traditional medicinal uses were similar throughout the Old and New World, but whether European settlers learned to use the herb from Native Americans or vice versa is open to debate. Besides using mullein leaf and flower teas to treat respiratory problems, some Native Americans also used the plant’s roots. The Creek Indians drank a decoction of the roots for coughs; other tribes smoked the roots or dried leaves to treat asthma.
Respiratory problems...that's pretty cool that it is in my yard...maybe the universe is telling me something.

elvan Next time I go to the store I am going to see if I can find this tea. I have been having a nagging cough for days now. Maybe this tea will help me some.
elvan yep I think you are correct that does look like mullein. I have not seen it grow so tall before. My mother use to always have some in her flower bed. Are the leaves have a little fuzz on them?
Yes, the leaves are fuzzy, it's really quite amazing since it wasn't there until this year...must be that I need to look into that tea...no thanks to smoking it.

I told my son...he is really excited. He is asthmatic...and still smokes. He drinks lots of tea though.
JACKIE1-25-15 I don't have a clue what kind of plant that is either I hope you find out. I showed my mom the picture of the plant and she said maybe from the aloe vera family so I googled pictures of aloe and I could not find any pictures that look like that.
I posted that I found out and checked answered. It is a burgundy bromeliad.

And obviously they CAN grow rather large!

When it started, it looked like a fuzzy little cabbage starting in the yard. I had no idea what it was...I also have no idea how to make the tea...will have to investigate that.
We have a loquat tree. tea from the leaves is also supposed to be good for the lungs. The instructions were to scrape the fuzziness off the bottom of the leaves but I don't recall if it was before or after they were dried. Anyway, you cut out the center spine and steep the dried leaf in boiling water.
I read that the flowers make a less bitter tea, I am not a fan of tea so it has to NOT be bitter.
My mother would take the leaves, wet them and apply to her swollen ankles. There was always a plant in her flower bed. But never as tall as yours.
Wonder if they would help with sciatica and knee pain. The leaves are HUGE.
It looks like a bromelaid to me. There are so many different types of bromelaids. It would be a houseplant (frost will kill it, but you can put it outside in warm weather), and will die after it blooms a beautiful flower. The good news is that it takes awhile to die, and in the meantime, it will produce baby plants close to it in the pot.
That mullein is a beautiful plant too. It's leaves are furry. My husband and I were driving down a dirt/rock road and saw them growing. He just pulled one up by the roots and planted it in the yard. The leaves are getting really big, but I think it is a really pretty color green.
I see the shoot for the flower starting. I will take it in when temperatures drop. Thanks for your input.
Oh, you're welcome. I love houseplants and gardening. I am obsessed. When I first met my husband, he said he counted 80 plants in my house. hahahahaha

Yeah, that doesn't look like a banana plant to me either. I've always thought of them as kind of palm like. It actually looks like a type of long leaf succulent. I couldn't find any that looked exactly like yours, which is really cool btw, but some similar.
