Its almost that time of year, to start thinking of planting. What are you planting this year?
I put bird baths around my garden to attract lots of bug eating birds. They are also fun to watch and photograph.
Love your new group cyn! besides cooking I love to garden !
Great Coug. You can give me lots of good recipies!
Hi Ladies! My sweetie plants a garden each year...he lives on an acreage so I can plant almost anything I want....
I want to make some fresh garden salsa this year.....can you ladies advise me which onions work the best and grow the best for salsa???
I just chop up the spring(bunch) onions. I like the pieces of the green in it.
Great idea for a group, cyn :)
My husband and I planted our peas, greens and root veggies yesterday. Seedlings for summer veggies will be started next weekend :D
DiD, I'm afraid I don't know anything about onions, because we don't like them. Sorry :/
What ever these are called.
hey I might come in handy for this group cyn lol Dakota every salsa recipe I have ever come acrossed used red onions :)
Great to see you Tsana! Your earlier then us.LOL. I'm just starting cukes, pumpkins, cantelope, watermellon etc indoors. We still have snow....
Cindy, I just looked at my recipe I used last year and it just said 'onions'. I think I did chop up red and also the bunch.
I say just use your favorite onions and make it your own salsa recipe :) I always do that lol
I lost a hand making salsa. just left it in, fine dices.
OUCH and EW WWWW!
What a wonderful idea for a group Cyn! Also, congrats on the turnout so far.
I joined not becasue I've planted anything but to be inspired by what others are doing. I do have a nice spot in my yard to go all out if I can find the energy and my body will copperate. I might think of hiring someone to do the physical part for me.
Anyway... INSPIRE ME!
@ Dale. Oooo. Yummy!
I still have high hopes for a green house, even a small one, we liveon rock and white soil. someone told me to plant onions and plow them under but theres so many rocks I can't plow anything,
we have had a back hoe come in and dig holes to plant trees adding top soil.
that was about 10 years ago , we have alot of pruning and fertilizing to do this year.
we have a false spring and our fruit trees get confused, they bloom and it freezes, a lady who grow s peaches told me to spray down the tree in the morning after the frost and it would save the fruit.
we just got our well fixed so we may try that.
I've tried containers, raised beds and no luck, my friend in town can grow anything and our neighbors too, but our land is bad.
Pray for my greenhouse guys, thanks glad to be here
I hope you plant something where you live, it would grow all on its own. I'm jealous, It's so moist where you are. Even some perenial flowers would be nice. they would keep coming back for you every year.
I live on a mountain in NH so growing is a little tough for me here, both because of the soil (it's too rocky) and also because of the wildlife (you name it, we've got it). BUT, this year I plan to do some container gardening in conjunction with using a little plot on my friends land at the bottom of our little mountain (her soil is better than mine, it's actually soil, lol). We're actually getting started indoors this coming weekend so the timing of thsi group is perfect!
My daughter-in-love and I , along with the 4 year-old planted two blueberrie bushes last weekend :). I hope we get some fruit this year. We were going to start our seeds yesterday, but the circus took up the entire day. I had a 10-ft. row of pole beans last year, and tons of cherry tomatoes. Unfortunately, the blasted hornworm showed up for the first time last year, dammit. Now I'm dealing with them as well as armyworms, and georgia clay, of which nothing seems to want to grow in. I don't know how much veggie gardening I want to do this year, but I will still do flowers. I miss the Wisconsin soil :(
Well I couldn't let Dale & Max have all the fun & be the only guys in here.
Yes Tx Lady those are green onions or Shallots.
It seems strange for some reason that that my hyacinths are already coming up. I know my crocus & daffodils are supposed to be blooming & I'm also seeing the tips of my trillium coming up. Anyway...I've also got lambs ear, clematis, hostas, daisies, hydrangea, azalea, balloon plants, camelia, blueberry, gardenia, blackberry, persimmon & other growing things. Oh yeah...crabgrass.
Aztec. We usually have itwarm up then freeze again, too. I thought you had to leave the water run on the trees...? to keep them from freezing...
I'm really worried about grasshoppers this year. They wiped me out last year and thy are supposed to be worse this year.
Hey Mike. You have all kinds of things already. Its been a strange winter. We already have buds on the lilacs and trees. We still have another 1 1/2 mths of winter!
Maggie- That would be great to get a little spot tilled up. It makes you feel so good to bite into YOUR OWN tomatoe or cuke. Go for it.
A pict. of part of my garden last year.
One of my roses...
Post pictures if you have them.
I have a tip on how to bring bighter color to roses and fuller bushes. In spring put coffee grinds around the base of the plants. My husband grandmother did it every spring and he does the same.We get beuatiful roses every year :)
Okay Cyn, Tsana, Coug....I think I'll plant green and red onions and put them both into my Salsa......now on to the hanging baskets of flowers I want to hang from my deck. Here is a link to a picture of the baskets that I want (saw them on a trip last Fall to the Black Hills).....can anyone tell me what and how they made them? Some of them hung down over 2 feet from the planter...they looked so awesome!
I know they are petunias but the greenery they mixed them with is what I'm uncertain about....
Coug, I put all my banana peels around my roses also.
Cindy, this is an interesting link. It might give you some ideas.
I have one plant in my house, it's too small for more.
its' a giant pathos and is huge over my kitchen table on the ceiling, it's about 10 years old it wasin the bathroom but got so big we moved it, it dies out and comes back, I haven't transplanted it in years, I feed it a couple times a year,
it thriveson neglect.
My mom can grow all kinds of stuff in her house, she has the room and the light.
We can't plant until the end of may, thats a great idea to start some stuff indoors,
still wanting a green house.
Happy March, it snowed the day before yesterday
Im kind aliking winter.
&5* today, so I am going to get the tiller out. Its a little early but it looks like an early spring.
Supposed to be 75 degrees...
TxLady, a cheap and easy way to kill areas of your yard for garden space or re-seeding is spread a dark plastic tarp over the area you intend to kill off and let the sun do it's work for a few days. probably need to weight it down with something. Whatever is under it will be dead in a week or so. The alternative is to dig it up or spray herbicide or have someone like me come around and tear the heck out of it with a tractor. heh, heh.
Potatoes, onions, beets, turnips, spinach, carrots, kale out there so far. probably do green beans, squash, cucumber, tomatoes, and a few things I'm probably forgetting as it warms up. Also raise chickens and organic grass-fed beef. used to keep some honey bees, but some mysterious malady made them all disappear. Also raise a few catfish for the table and when we're lucky get a little fruit, berries, and nuts when the weather is optimal. We have participated in the local farmers' market in the past, but we had drought which kind of discouraged us the last couple years. It's all a coin toss. HAHAHAHA
Herbs. I have the hardest time growing herbs from a pot inside. Suggestions? I would love to have my own herb garden.
Well the laST 2 DAYS, i'VE BEEN PLANTING and almost have every thing in. I still have to plant corn, peppers, tomatoes pumpkins and cukes. Its still a little cool yet.
Your orchid is beautiful! Really cool!
Hello? No has posted here in a long time. Is everyone out gardening? I do have a question. Since we moved this is the first time I have been able to grow things like watermellon. How do I know when to pick it? Will it continue to ripen after it is picked?
Hi Jody. I always waited untill it thumped when you tapped on it or it smelled sweet.
Hi cyn. Thanks for responding. I picked the first one, 13 1/2 lbs, and it was still green inside. I tried the tapping and thought it sounded ok but evidently not! I have another one I will probably pick tomorrow. The sound when tapped does sound better this time and the part resting on the ground is creamy. I'll let you know what I get.
Does every one have their gardens tilled and ready for winter?
