Hi Mike, welcome to our site.

You need to educate yourself on nicotine addiction.

Stay close to the site, ask questions and blog here. Read the blogs from others also. It is all helpfu. There will be so much support for you here if you stay. All the members here at EX are so helpful and supportive!

My first suggestion would be to read Allen Carr--The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It's a quick easy read. It was so instrumental to my quit! Really, do yourself a favor and READ it!! Just click on the link I provide and start your smoke free journey

Best wishes,

Kim

Welcome Mike, I smoked for 40+ also. This is my first intentional quit. I quit once for about six months when I got really sick. With the help of this site, I believe this is my final quit! Read everything suggested and follow the quit plan steps that the site lays out for you. Knowledge is power and you can beat this thing! Come to the blogs often and you will get lots of support.

Welcome!

I also smoked for 40+ years and, with the help of the Allen Carr book and all the wonderful tips and support here on this site, I quit on 7/4/12 and am still going strong!

There is also a recommended reading on quitsmokingonline.com,  Read all that you can....the better informed you are, the better plan you can make for yourself.  After the readings, you will need to decide which aid you will use, if any, and then make your plan, including what crave busters you will use to distract yourself when the inevitable crave hits you in the early days of your quit.  I used hard candy, computer games, reading the blogs and responses here and Allen Carr.  I have recently read people who do the multiplication tables in their head, or try to recite the alphabet backwards.  The more craves you successfully navigate, the less frequent and intense they will become.

Stay close to us here.  Ask of advice and support when you need it.

Welcome Mike - congrats on choosing to stop.  You'll gain so much and lose nothing.

Learning all I could about nicotine addiction was helpful for me so I knew what to expect and what to do about it.  Also, my anxiety over my quit date was way worse than the day itself.  Wasted a lot of energy getting myself worked up over the quit date.  Think of it as your birthday, and you're giving yourself the best present ever.

Hi Mike...The best advice I can offer you is to not give up on yourself during your quit. I had such a horrible time in the beginning and I kept telling myself I can't do it but with determination I am 7 months quit. Also....do not put yourself in tempting situations. I love to play bingo..but it's at a casino--filled with smoke. I stayed away for about 4 months...now I can go without the feeling of temptation.

Good Luck!!
